Top House Democrat complains that Republicans just don’t understand the Second Amendment

Public shock and outrage over several recent mass shootings may have subsided now that the news cycle has moved on but Democrats are more determined than ever to drastically erode the Second Amendment rights of law-abiding Americans, and one of them is January 6 committee member Rep. Jamie Raskin who suggested that GOP lawmakers don’t understand the Constitution.

The Maryland Democrat, an academic who spent over 25 years as a constitutional law professor before he got into politics, bemoaned the reluctance of Republicans to get on board with new gun control legislation during this week’s edition of the podcast “Speaking Freely” where he discussed a wide range of issues with host Floyd Abrams.

One of those issues was last week’s House vote to ban so-called assault weapons by a 217-213 tally that was hailed as a major victory by Nancy Pelosi although it is almost certain to be dead on arrival in the Senate where it will need 60 votes to overcome a Republican filibuster which didn’t stop Madam Speaker from crowing that the bill is “a crucial step in our ongoing fight against the deadly epidemic of gun violence.”

During the interview, which was recorded last Friday just before the bill passed in the lower chamber, the host asked Raskin about the progress of the legislation that would be the proverbial camel’s nose under the tent in the left’s crusade for the Holy Grail of gun confiscation.

“We’re hoping that this will be, you know, one of the final things that we do before we break for the August recess,” said Raskin. “I mean, we’ve been treated to these bloody spectacles of mass shootings and massacres of school children, grocery shoppers, people in churches, people in synagogues, we need to act, we need to take it seriously.”

The impeachment veteran put the blame for slow progress on gun control on Republicans whom he accused of struggling to understand the Second Amendment.

“What we’re getting from our colleagues across the aisle is just repetition of dogmas about the Second Amendment that are refuted, um, by the text of the Constitution,” he stated. “They get up and they say, you know, ‘Raskin just wants to repeal the Second Amendment.’ I don’t want them to repeal the Second Amendment. I want them to read the Second Amendment.”

“Just read the bills,” Raskin complained, pointing the finger of blame at the National Rifle Association, one of the left’s favorite bogeymen. “But the NRA thrives off of the dogma that you — they can’t allow one bit of regulation, no matter how reasonable otherwise, you know, everybody’s guns are gonna be confiscated. It’s absolute BS and nonsense.”

Last week, Raskin took to Twitter where he opened fire on gun manufacturers.

“In the last decade, gun makers raked in over $1b in profits from assault weapon sales alone. These weapons of war are useful for hunting—hunting people, that is, and it’s past time to hold manufacturers accountable for their dangerous marketing tactics,” he said.

In addition to waging war on the Second Amendment, Raskin has also reportedly set his sights on abolishing the Electoral College.

Like his fellow constitutional law “expert” and former college professor Barack Obama, Raskin has shown that he has little regard if not outright contempt for the intentions of the Founding Fathers.
