The progressive, soft-on-crime policies plaguing major metropolitan areas haven’t merely been a bane to everyday citizens as one of Chicago’s top prosecutors made that clear in his resignation letter to Cook County State’s Attorney Kim Foxx Friday when, after 25 years, the “tone-deaf” administration had become more than he could take.
Assistant Cook County State’s Attorney (ASA) Jim Murphy had overseen grand jury matters and felony bail hearings in and around Chicago, Illinois until Friday when he tendered his resignation in an office-wide email panning the “political narratives and agendas” of Foxx and her ilk.
“This was my dream job,” Murphy explained in the letter obtained by CWBChicago. But while he lauded the hard work of many who worked alongside him, his experience working as an ASA had begun to sour with the passage of the Safe-T Act. Signed by Gov. J.B. Pritzker in Jan. 2021, the legislation began the elimination of cash bail within two years and opened the door for citizens to make anonymous complaints against officers.
“I wish I could stay. I would love to continue to fight for the victims of crime…especially in the face of the overwhelming crime that is crippling our communities,” Murphy explained. “However, I can no longer work for this administration. I have zero confidence in their leadership.”
While he expressed his favorable attitude toward certain policies like the end of cash bail, his biggest gripe appeared to be Foxx’s overall leniency toward violent offenders and her larger concern about her own image. Murphy cited a specific incident where a woman had been “gunned down in a crossfire” while walking to the store and the headline of a local paper had read, “Man won’t face murder charge under the Safe-T Act.”
“The State’s Attorney voiced her concern with the headline and the heat she was getting from her backers and never voiced any concern over the fact that this woman was shot and killed simply walking to the store. And nobody was going to face a murder charge,” he railed.
“That is what is wrong with this administration. I’ve seen day after day. How many mass shootings do there have to be before something is done? This administration is more concerned with political narratives and agendas than with victims and prosecuting violent crime. That,” Murphy lamented, “is why I can’t stay any longer.”
The now-former ASA wasn’t alone in his foisting blame on Foxx for her failures to prosecute crime in the Windy City. Even progressive Mayor Lori Lightfoot (D) has attempted to lay the burden of responsibility for the degradation of Chicago on the state’s attorney, arguing, “If the bad guys that are out there that are picking up guns and shooting without any regard for the sanctity of life, do not believe there’s accountability for them, the brazenness will not end. It will escalate, it will continue and our communities will not be safe.”

Murphy had been singled out for his efforts to push back against violent offenders, having faced a suspension for his representation of the case of Adam Toledo where a 13-year-old had been shot by a Chicago police officer. The boy was said to have been wielding a firearm at the time and the officer shooting had been believed justified, but at the early stages of the investigation, Murphy’s depiction did not suit the narrative of Foxx’s office.
“If this administration was truly concerned with effectively fighting violent crime, then they would staff those courtrooms and Units,” he said of claims that focus was being moved from low-level crimes to fighting the “drivers of violence.”
“Not create more useless policy positions on the Executive Staff at the expense of hiring more ASAs who can work in the trenches. Meanwhile, the rest of us are overworked, overstressed, and under-resourced. But at least we were allowed to wear jeans in July,” he quipped.
“That move illustrates how tone-deaf this Administration is,” Murphy added for effect.
According to Fox 32 and CWBChicago, the State’s Attorney’s Office did not respond to requests for comment.
