‘Straw that broke the camel’s back’: Viewers ticked that Fox News airs Pence’s DC speech, not Trump’s

Viewers are declaring that they are dumping Fox News after the network decided to air former Vice President Mike Pence’s D.C. speech on Tuesday, but not former President Trump’s in an apparent political diss.

Trump spoke in Washington, D.C. at the America First Policy Institute (AFPI) summit. Pence gave a speech at the Young Americas Foundation’s national student conference in DC just hours before the former president spoke. Conservatives were confused about why the network would air one speech and not the other. Some were livid over it.

Trump’s speech at the AFPI summit was organized by former senior officials in his administration. It was the first time that he had been in D.C. since President Biden took office in January 2021 and therefore was an important prelude to his possible candidacy in 2024.

“Fox News had Mike Pence’s speech on today but they did not have President Trump,” one person tweeted. “I won’t be watching Fox News again, today was the straw that broke the camel’s back.”

Another person on Twitter said, “Fox did not cover Trump’s return to Washington D. C. to give his campaign speech today. It’s like Fox is cutting ties with Trump.”

There is a deepening rift between Pence and Trump and it seems fairly obvious that the former vice president has set his sights on running in 2024 despite the majority of conservatives standing behind the former president. The dueling speeches in D.C. did not appear to be a coincidence. They also recently held dual rallies in Arizona on the same day in support of their respective gubernatorial candidates.

Trump focused on law and order and securing the southern border in his speech. He also suggested tent cities for the homeless.

“Under the Democrat rule, in Democrat-run cities, Democrat-run states, and a Democrat-run federal government, the criminals have been given free rein more than ever before. There’s never been a time like this,” he declared.

Trump also reiterated his calls for convicted drug dealers to receive the death penalty and railed against the horrors of MS-13.

Pence claims that he agrees with Trump on issues but they differ on political focus. It’s a not-so-subtle jab at Trump believing he won the last presidential election. The former vice president says he is focused on the future, not the past.

“There seems to be a divide between the two of you on your outlook on what the future of the conservative movement might be,” a student who identified himself as Andrew Bechard of Gettysburg College asked Pence, according to Fox News. “Do you think that this divide extends to the rest of the conservative movement, like the general public? And what do you think we can do to alleviate it?”

“I don’t know that our movement is that divided. I don’t know that the president and I differ on issues. But we may differ on focus. I truly do believe that elections are about the future, and that is absolutely essential at a time when so many Americans are hurting,” he said in answer to the question.

The leftist media seized on the perceived slap at Trump by Fox News. MSNBC’s Ari Melber pointed out that Fox News “aired roughly six of House Jan. 6 Committee hearings live,” but decided not to air Trump’s AFPI speech.

The day before Trump was set to speak in D.C. he slammed “Fox & Friends,” asserting that the show has “gone to the ‘dark side.’” The comment came after the hosts alluded to Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis leading Trump in a number of purported polls.

“@foxandfriends just really botched my poll numbers, no doubt on purpose. That show has been terrible — gone to the ‘dark side.’ They quickly quote the big Turning Point Poll victory of almost 60 points over the number two Republican, and then hammer me with outliers. Actually, almost all polls have me leading all Republicans & Biden BY A LOT,” Trump commented on TRUTH Social.

“RINO Paul Ryan, one of the weakest and worst Speakers EVER, must be running the place,” he charged.
