Hours after several congressional staff members were arrested in Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer’s (D-N.Y.) office Monday, Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) tweeted her support for the zealots, including a member of her own staff who took part in the stunning and brave display of civil disobedience in the name of the climate.
“Six demonstrators were arrested for DC Code §22-3302 Unlawful Entry for failing to leave the office after they were told to leave,” police said in a statement, according to The Daily Wire. “The six people who were arrested are all House staffers.”
The six staffers arrested Monday were:
- Saul Levin, a staffer for Rep. Cori Bush (D-Mo.)
- Aria Kovalovich, a staffer for Rep. Ro Khanna (D-Calif.)
- Rajiv Sicora, a staffer for Rep. Jamaal Bowman (D-N.Y.)
- Courtney Koelbel, a staffer for Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-Md.)
- Philip Bennett, a staffer for Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.)
- Emma Preston, another staffer for Khanna
“I’m not just supportive of the staff who protested for climate action today, including my own. I’m proud. Damn proud,” Omar tweeted Monday.

Rep. Khanna echoed Omar’s sentiments with his own tweet of righteous indignation, writing, “I stand in solidarity with all of the staffers, including those in my office, who peacefully protested for climate action today. Protecting our planet is not a radical idea.”

Several of the staffers tweeted photos of themselves while occupying Schumer’s office
“BREAKING: Congressional staff are staging a peaceful sit-in in @SenSchumer’s office to protest our leaders’ failure and inaction on climate policy and urge them to use every last negotiating tool to meet this moment,” Aria Kovalovich tweeted Monday. “The time to act is NOW. Staffers, come through.”

“Right now, we Hill staffers are peacefully protesting Dem leaders INSIDE,” Levin tweeted. “To my knowledge, this has never been done. We’ve also never seen climate catastrophe, so we’re meeting the moment.”

The Minnesota Democrat was among many who presented themselves for mockery and ridicule while protesting the overturning of Roe v. Wade at the Supreme Court building in an effort to get the SCOTUS justices to go to their rooms and think about what they’ve done.
Both Omar and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) pretended to be handcuffed as they were escorted away from where they had blocked traffic. Moments later, the full “squad” element took a nice group photo to celebrate playing hooky from work.
“The Supreme Court will not stop us. Even though they arrested us, we won’t stop our organizing, agitating, and legislating for justice. We got us,” tweeted Rep. Cori Bush (D-MO).

Levin, incidentally, was hilariously mocked for his decision to wear the same green bandana as the “squad” members, only he chose to do it in the fashion of “Prison Mike,” one of the inventions of Steve Carell’s character Michael Scott from the hit comedy series “The Office.”
