Mayor Bowser wants states to stop bringing migrants to DC, they’re overcrowding shelters

Washington, D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser (D) put her rank hypocrisy on full display Sunday as she suggested open borders were only a problem if illegal immigrants were being “tricked” into coming to her city.

The progressive mayor joined CBS News host Margaret Brennan on “Face the Nation” Sunday to discuss an array of topics and among them was immigration policy. However, the topic was not raised in a typical fashion as the host led through the compounded issue of homelessness by referencing a report from The Washington Post.

Specifically, the Post had reported that the decision from Govs. Greg Abbott (R-Texas) and Doug Ducey (R-Ariz.) to bus illegals to the nation’s capital was causing the homeless shelters to fill and so Brennan asked, “How significant is this influx? How many people?”

With a definitively speculative response, Bowser skirted specifics and instead focused on how the border crisis shouldn’t be something that she should have to deal with.

“Well, this is a very significant issue. We have for sure called on the federal government to work across state lines to prevent people from really being tricked into getting on buses,” she claimed. “We think they’re largely asylum seekers who are going to final destinations that are not Washington, D.C.”

“I worked with the White House to make sure that FEMA provided a grant to a local organization that is providing services to folks,” Bowser went on without explaining whether that had anything to do with the illegals coming to her city and reasserted that they shouldn’t be coming to D.C. “But, I fear that they’re being tricked into nationwide bus trips when their final destinations are places all over the United States of America.”

As previously reported, by mid-June more than 2,000 illegal immigrants had been transported from Texas to D.C. on 65 buses. Another 14 buses had sent more than 500 illegals from Arizona. Many of them were using the capital as a waypoint to New York and New Jersey, but all were expected to consent to the trip before boarding the buses.

These numbers amount to a mere fraction of the encounters of a single month at the border that has seen over 200,000 for four months straight and Fox News’ Bill Melugin, who has remained at the forefront of coverage at the U.S.-Mexico border, highlighted just that with a response to Bowser’s lament.

Brennan went on to clarify of the mayor’s position, “So it’s not just local taxpayers picking up the tab, you’re saying the federal government is helping.”

“Well, local taxpayers are not picking up the tab and should not pick up the tab,” she explained. “We really need a coordinated federal response. We know that it’s done for refugees who come to the states from all points of the world and the same has to be done in this situation.”

A coordinated response is all that anyone has asked of President Joe Biden and his administration from the start as they have done more to encourage illegal immigration and facilitate it than to secure the border. However, Bowser managed to encapsulate precisely how liberal elites think of the concerns of regular Americans, that is to say, these problems only merit a response when they are personally impacted.
