Curmudgeon 60s rocker David Crosby suffers social media beat-down after mocking fan drawing of him

David Crosby — formerly of the famed folk rock group Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young — just received a salutary lesson in why it’s best to say nothing at all if you have nothing nice to say.

On Saturday, the aging rocker really stepped in it, metaphorically speaking, when he mocked a portrait of himself which was shared by a fan on Twitter.

“Hi @thedavidcrosby hope you are keeping well. Did a picture of you…. Thanks for the music,” the fan tweeted, with a stylized portrait of the old rocker in profile.

It didn’t take long for Crosby to prove to the world that he’s not a very nice guy.

“That is the weirdest painting of me. I have ever seen …..don’t quit your day job ……,” Crosby tweeted back. Not “thank you,” or “I appreciate your support,” or even just hit the like button. Instead, Crosby had to insult the fan, and the backlash on Twitter was immediate.

“How’s this one, Dave? I just drew it quick, with the look on your face when you realize you may have come across like an a**hole here,” one user tweeted, posting a much less flattering portrait of the classic rocker.

“Hmm. I think it is pretty cool,” another person wrote. “I also think your response to an artist sharing his art, and his love for you and your music, is pretty crappy. C’mon man. People love you. And you probably just crushed a living fan for no other reason than to criticize his art and the thought.”

Bill Corbett, of the “Mystery Science Theater 3000” comedy team, had his own thoughts about it.

“Send up the Phoebe Bridgers bat-signal,” he wrote, along with a subsequent tweet linking to a story about a spat between Phoebe Bridgers and David Crosby, in which she called the old rocker a “bitch.”

The artist and fan who created the derided portrait took it all in stride and was pretty gracious with his response: “After yesterday’s somewhat lively discussion on subjectivity in art appreciation, I’d just like to say thank you to the all the new followers and those who took the time to leave comments. Best wishes.”
