Jon Stewart answers call to run for president with terse but polite response

Support for President Joe Biden is underwater and a majority of Americans see the country is heading in the wrong direction ahead of the midterm elections. So, while the Democratic party scrambles to coalesce around a figure to lead them as a viable presidential candidate in 2024, comedian Jon Stewart weighed in after his name had been bandied about.

Host of the Apple TV+ show “The Problem with Jon Stewart” and formerly of “The Daily Show,” Stewart has built a reputation as an advocate for veterans and first responders. In fact, the yeoman’s work that he has put in for heroes at home and abroad to get the medical treatment they need was integral to the rationale from a recent Politico op-ed that managed to highlight the division from the left surrounding their leadership troubles.

Written by public affairs guru Juleanna Glover, the op-ed makes the “fairly serious” case that Stewart is “exactly the person the Democrats need” if  Biden decided not to run.

“Joe Biden should run for president in 2024,” Glover writes. “But if he decides against it for whatever reason, and the Democrats want a serious shot at retaining the White House, Jon Stewart should run on the Democratic ticket instead.”

Fellow comedian Dave Chappelle counted himself in the pro-Stewart column in April when he was receiving the Mark Twain Prize at the Kennedy Center, addressing his peer directly stating, “I wish you would run for president.” The adoring votes of confidence led Stewart to offer a terse but polite decline, “Ummm…No thank you.”

It remains to be seen if Stewart will hold to his declination as he demonstrated a natural talent for politics by turning the conversation back to his key issue with a followup tweet, “But while I have your attention, could all of you (including news orgs) please ask [Sen. Pat Toomey (R-PA)] why he is single-handedly stalling a veterans health care bill that passed [with] huge bipartisan support over a technicality? Asking for 3.5 million friends. Thanks!”

The comedian has long been a proponent of the Honoring Our Promise to Address Comprehensive Toxics (PACT) Act which, in part, seeks to remove the burden of proof from injured veterans to receive care for exposure to burn pits. During a Memorial Day Weekend rally, Stewart had lamented the lack of active support from Americans stating “we come out here today looking for the support of the American people, and what do we have behind me? It’s veterans organizations. It’s veterans. It’s their families. This country can’t be this broken.”

As he made clear in his tweet, the bill had garnered bipartisan support and is expected to be adjusted after Congress returns from their Independence Day recess. The Buffalo News had reported on Toomey’s objections to the current language where the senator had stated, “The Department of Veterans Affairs already has the authority to ensure veterans receive this care where the evidence has established a connection to their service. Instead, the PACT Act goes far beyond, substituting Congress’ political judgment in place of available evidence and including unnecessary changes to longstanding budget rules to enable hundreds of billions in additional spending on unrelated purposes.”

The objection from the outgoing Pennsylvania lawmaker would likely land him in Stewart’s category of “sh*theads” currently in Congress as he had referred to the legislative body in a March interview on the podcast “Sway” with Kara Swisher. At that time he stated how he had considered running for office to replace the aforementioned category of politicians adding, “How do you not when you watch all that and you’re like, oh my God, what is – this is terrible.”

But the broad base that Politico suggested Stewart might find is likely nonexistent as he has sided with the woke mindset about systemic racism permeating our society. Even Chappelle joked, “I imagine it would be hard for a coke guy to do.”
