With her maternal instincts in high gear, a brave mom jumped on the hood of her car as an alleged carjacker sped away with the latter’s two young kids in the family vehicle.
Surveillance traffic camera video depicted New Mexico librarian Melody Maldonado clinging to the front of the white Hyundai to protect her six-year-old daughter and 11-month-old son who were inside.
The female suspect allegedly had pushed Maldonado, 33, out of the way at a gas station/convenience store at about 8:30 p.m. local time as she unlocked the driver’s side door. The suspect then took off with the vehicle and its precious cargo.
The Hobbs, N.M., mom held on as long as she could.
“She definitely heard me. I yelled for her to stop and that my kids were in the car,” Maldonado told the Daily Mail. “She kept driving. We went a good distance, through an intersection…She was swerving so that I would fall off…I was banging on the window the whole time, telling her to stop.”
The news outlet added the following about the July 4th incident: “Maldonado was eventually thrown from the hood of the car, and broke her foot. However, despite her injury she still sprinted to a nearby convenience store where she called for help.
“I didn’t care what happened to the car. I just wanted my kids back,” she understandably asserted.

During a police chase, the suspect, 29, reportedly dumped the girl in a residential area, where she was cared for by good Samaritan homeowners in the vicinity until reunited with her mom.
“She left my daughter on the street because my daughter had a phone and she thought that they were tracking her with the phone,” Maldonado noted.
The suspect subsequently abandoned the vehicle with the baby still inside. Hobbs, N.M., cops located the vehicle and apprehended the alleged carjacker nearby after a brief foot pursuit.
Fortunately, neither of the kids were harmed in the nightmarish encounter that lasted about a half-hour, but must have seemed like an eternity for the Maldonado family.
Watch a report aired by Albuquerque TV station KRQE News 13:
After the incident, the suspect, who apparently had outstanding warrants, “was charged with unlawful taking of a motor vehicle, aggravated fleeing of a law enforcement officer, two counts of child abuse, resisting/evading or obstructing an officer, and three counts of failure to appear,” Fox News reported.
Fox also claims that the woman “has a lengthy criminal history.”
The suspect, whose motive in the alleged carjacking has not been determined, is due back in court on July 18. Prosecutors are reportedly seeking to keep her behind bars in the meantime.
All suspects are presumed innocent until or unless they are convicted in a court of law of any alleged crimes.
