Mom tells 9-yr-old son to get a shotgun during welfare check, gets busted by police

A California mother of two confronted San Bernardino County Sheriff’s deputies and it did not go well for her after she sent her 9-year-old son to fetch a shotgun during a wellness check, resulting in her arrest.

Police were called to the home on July 7, 2022, at about 1:22 am, in the 11,000 block of 5th Street in the City of Rancho Cucamonga, California. over an alleged domestic dispute on Thursday after neighbors heard a man and a woman arguing and going at it full tilt. When they got there, they were met by 29-year-old Brittany Coney, according to the sheriff’s department. She was not cooperative, to say the least.

The belligerent young mother evidently refused to allow the officers inside the home to check on the welfare of her family when she was speaking with them. That’s when things really went off the rails and Coney sent her son for the gun, according to Fox News.

“During the contact, Coney directed her 9-year-old son to grab a shotgun from inside her residence,” a sheriff’s news release stated. “The juvenile retrieved a shotgun and approached Coney and the deputies.”

That move could have gotten the little boy killed. Coney has an 11-year-old son as well.

At that point, the deputies “withdrew” from the residence according to authorities. They wanted to avoid escalating the conflict and harming the children.

“For the safety of the juveniles, deputies quickly withdrew from the situation, preventing a lethal encounter,” stated a release from the police.

Shortly thereafter, the Sheriff’s Specialized Enforcement Division (SED) responded to assist with the apprehension of Coney. SED, along with Rancho Cucamonga Sheriff’s deputies, arrested the mother without further incident.

Police executed a search warrant and searched the home, finding the loaded shotgun. The place was reportedly filthy and unsanitary. There wasn’t enough food for the children and the home was uninhabitable. The two children were removed from the home and placed with Child Protective Services after the mom was taken away.

Coney was charged with child abuse, obstruction, and resisting arrest. There was no mention of gun charges.

California is seeing skyrocketing crime across the state. This incident follows another one that just made headlines where a couple allegedly set a man on fire.

Patricia Castillo and Leonard Hawkins are now facing charges of attempted murder, arson, and conspiracy, according to the Sanger Police Department Facebook page.

Police responded to a call involving an injured person at approximately 9:15 p.m. on Thursday at a park in Sanger, California in Fresno County. The man who had been set on fire was suffering severe burns but spoke with police when they arrived on the scene. He claims that Castillo lit him on fire.

The incident was reportedly caught on surveillance video, according to Fox News and Castillo and Hawkins were identified from the footage.

Police assert that Castillo approached the man and proceeded to throw a cup of liquid on him. The victim and the suspect then argued before Castillo sparked a lighter and torched the guy.

An investigation determined that Hawkins provided the accelerant to Castillo that she used to set the man on fire.

Castillo and Hawkins have been booked into the Fresno County Jail, according to police.

The victim was transported to a local hospital and is expected to survive his burns.

Both crimes indicate a severe moral decline in the Golden State amid crime spiraling out of control.
