It doesn’t appear that left-wing progressives – particularly those maladjusted souls in Hollywood – will ever grow tired of flagellating themselves at the altar of wokeness.
The latest media luminary to volunteer as tribute to the insatiable alligator of identity politics is Marta Kauffman, the co-creator of NBC’s seminal ’90s sitcom “Friends.” As part of her self-imposed penance, she pledged last week to donate $4 million to her alma mater, Boston’s Brandeis University, in order to establish an endowed professorship in the school’s African and African American studies department, Fox News reported.
“In this case, I’m finally, literally putting my money where my mouth is,” Kauffman gushed. “I feel I was finally able to make some difference in the conversation.”
As the proverbial saying goes, “A fool and his money are soon parted” (or, in this case, “her” money, so as not to misgender Kauffman.)
Misgendering, it seems, is just one of the many offenses the sitcom creator has charged herself with, obviously drawing on the tutelage of such noble anti-racist heroes as Ibram X. Kendi.
“It took me a long time to begin to understand how I internalized systemic racism,” Kauffman explained during a Brandeis Alumni interview. “I’ve been working really hard to become an ally, an anti-racist. And this seemed to me to be a way that I could participate in the conversation from a white woman’s perspective.”
In yet another recent interview, Kauffman apologized specifically for referring to Chandler Bing’s cross-dressing father as a man in the scripts for the various episodes in which the character appeared.
“Pronouns were not yet something that I understood,” Kauffman told the BBC in the interview which is set to air on Monday, July 11. “So we didn’t refer to that character as ‘she.’ That was a mistake.”
She regrets referring to the character, played by the inimitable Kathleen Turner, as Chandler’s “father” and not his “mother.”
“We kept referring to her as Chandler’s father, even though Chandler’s father was trans,” she told the BBC. Fox News noted, however, that the show’s writers never used the word “transgender” to describe Bing’s father, referring instead to the character as a gay man who performed in drag. So, it would seem that Kauffman’s newfound contrition is somewhat manufactured.
As an ancillary plot point throughout the series, Turner’s character, Charles Bing, headlined a drag revue under the stage name of Helena Handbasket. Matthew Perry’s character Chandler at one point quipped, “If I turn into my parents, I’ll either be an alcoholic blond chasing after 20-year-old boys, or I’ll end up like my mom.”
Morgan Fairchild played Chandler Bing’s mother, and at Chandler and Monica’s wedding, Turner’s character remarks that Fairchild’s character is too old to wear a low-cut dress, who then responds without missing a beat and asks her ex-husband, “don’t you have a little too much penis to be wearing a dress like that?”
But thanks to the progressive Left, everything is offensive and nothing is funny anymore.
Kauffman also laments the lack of diversity in “Friends,” which over its ten-year run drew less criticism for having primarily white characters than it did for laughably maintaining that Monica and Rachel could afford such a gargantuan West Village apartment on their respective salaries.
“I was unaware of that, which makes me feel stupid,” she said of her apparent internalized racism. “That was a very valid, extremely difficult criticism which still… I get emotional about.”
“If I knew then what I know now, there are certain things I would have changed. But I didn’t know them and I have since learned.”
What Kauffman hasn’t learned is that no amount of repentance can ever be enough for the Left.
