On the eve of Independence Day, a newly unearthed video depicted far-left U.S. Senate hopeful Mandela Barnes lamenting the founding of America as “awful.”
Barnes, the lieutenant governor of Wisconsin, is one of eight Democrats vying for the opportunity to run against incumbent Republican Ron Johnson in November. The Democrat primary is scheduled for August 9.
Milwaukee talk show host Dan O’Donnell posted the video clip on Sunday containing the candidate’s less-than-celebratory remarks that the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel claims were made last August at an event in Portage, Wisc.
“Imagine being so ashamed of how we got to this place in America that you outlaw teaching it,” Barnes told the audience at the time, in apparently alluding to the legacy of slavery and perhaps divisive critical race theory curriculum.
“Things were bad, things were terrible,” he continued. “The founding of this nation? Awful. You know, but we are here now, and we should commit ourselves to doing everything we can do to repair the harm because it still exists today. The harm, the damage, whether it was colonization or whether it was slavery. The impacts are felt today, and they’re going to continue to be felt unless we address it in a meaningful way.”

In response, a Barnes spokeswoman provided an unrepentant statement to the media that contained two of the Democrats’ favorite talking points: “Painting the Lt. Governor’s comment as anything other than a condemnation of slavery is a sad GOP attempt to distract from Ron Johnson trying to literally overthrow the government of this country and strip reproductive rights from millions of Americans.”
In a dueling statement, Wisconsin GOP official Mike Marinella asserted that “Barnes’ comments prove why Democrats are advocating for policies that would fundamentally dismantle our country. Our elected officials need to fight for America — not the fringe-left.”
According to the Journal Sentinel, Sen. Johnson has denied an allegation that he attempted to submit a list of so-called fake electors on January 6, 2021, when Congress met to certify the 2020 presidential election outcome.
Late last month, Barnes won the endorsement of U.S. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) in his quest to unseat Johnson. According to the Democratic Socialists of America website, AOC “is DSA’s foremost socialist superstar.” Other Democrat lawmakers who have endorsed Barnes include U.S. Sens. Elizabeth Warren and Cory Booker as well as U.S. Rep. James Clyburn.
The Barnes video set off some fireworks on social media. Here is just a sample:
I love America and our founding principles of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.
Evers needs to call out his lieutenant governor for these awful comments about our great nation. Unless of course he agrees… https://t.co/9wVtA5llog

I don’t get people that think like this. They benefit from the country they hate yet this is the mentality that they have. Not a single country in the world is perfect. Yes, in every country’s history they are awful things but damn! defend and be proud of your country.

Western civilization didn’t invent slavery but we’re the only civilization in history to spend blood and gold to end it. BTW one of the many benefits of British colonialism in Africa was finally stamping out the slave trade — you’re welcome.

I know this isn’t the point of this post, but I am so tired of the trope, “we need to finally address slavery in a meaningful way.” How have we not addressed it? We constantly go over how horrible, morally bankrupt and flat out wrong it was in pretty much every facet of society.
