New Orleans on track to become ‘murder capital’ of US under Dem leadership

The skewed priorities of progressive leaders has wrought havoc across the nation and, after attaining a 50-year low for homicides in 2019, New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell (D) has led her city to become the “murder capital of the United States.”

Like New York City, Chicago and Los Angeles led by Mayor’s Eric Adams, Lori Lightfoot and Eric Garcetti respectively, violent crime has thrived wherever Democratic leaders have been elected. New Orleans has been no different with Cantrell at the helm after being reelected to a second term in 2021.

Current crime statistics have set the pace for New Orleans “to be the murder capital of United States” if something isn’t changed this year, WVUE reported.

“According to data from AH Datalytics, compiled using the FBI’s Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) program, New Orleans has a per capita year-to date homicide rate of 72 per 100,000,” the outlet stated. “The next three U.S. cities behind New Orleans are Birmingham with a per capita homicide rate of 59 per 100,000 residents and Baltimore and St. Louis, each with a per capita homicide rate of 58 per 100,000 residents.”

This top spot was garnered after reaching a 50-year low in 2019, but Cantrell has refused to accept these facts as reality. When WVUE’s David Jones noted, “We’re on pace, if we keep this pace, to have the most. murders since the 90s,” she replied, “That’s not true. That’s not true at all.”

“This is something the police, my superintendent spoke on yesterday. You can look at the pace now, the pace now is not the full year. I think that looking at the data from month to month, week to week, you can see areas and signs of true progress based on the key arrests police officers have made,” she continued. “Relative to our trends, no way. No way.”

Cantrell insisted, “I would say that public safety is a priority and requires a holistic approach…and that has been our way,” but the results don’t reflect her claims.

The Metropolitan Crime Commission’s (MCC) weekly bulletin reported homicides up 155 percent for the week starting June 21 compared to the same week in 2019 with total homicides reaching 148 for the year.

“I mean, that’s almost a murder a day,” New Orleans City Councilman Eugene Green (D) told Fox News Digital in defense of Cantrell’s limited remarks on specific incidents. “It’s hard to make a statement every day.”

Carjackings are also up 191 percent with the year-to-date total reaching 154 by June 27.

Meanwhile, the mayor has placed virtue signaling at the forefront of her leadership. These behaviors led Robert Collins, a political analyst at Dillard University, to contend, “We see that the mayor and other city leaders don’t really understand the magnitude of the problem. The elected leaders in the city don’t seem to have the same opinion that the majority of the citizens have in the city, as far as the city is in crisis mode right now and that they should be taking the appropriate emergency actions.”

That position is reflected in the approval of Cantrell which, according to a Faucheux Strategies and New Orleans Crime Coalition poll, has plummeted nearly 20 points since last year. Currently sitting at a 44 percent approval, the mayor had been at 62 percent last year and now three out of four New Orleanians say the city is on the wrong track.

MCC president Rafael Goyeneche told WVUE, “You’ve got two components of the criminal justice system: dwindling numbers of officers, that means they can’t get to crime scenes and when they do get to crime scenes, they are overwhelmed with violent crime. If they’re fortunate enough to make an arrest, we have the District Attorney’s office that, at least in 2021, the first year of Jason Williams, was more inclined to refuse and dismiss those cases.”

“If the streets were flooded with water to the extent they’re flooded with violent crime right now,” he said, “we’d be moving heaven and earth to pump the water our. We’ve been ignoring the flood of violent crime for two and a half years. We just put on some hip boots and are walking through it.”
