The Jan. 6 committee circus refreshed its programming with the disputed testimony of a White House aide Tuesday and hangers-on gleefully embraced the chance to pile on in favor of their own grift.
Among the rabble was Stephanie Grisham, the former chief of staff and press secretary for first lady Melania Trump who also did a stint as White House press secretary and communications director during President Donald Trump’s administration.
Like others, she saw the Tuesday testimony of Cassidy Hutchinson, an aide to then-chief of staff Mark Meadows, as a major development that she needed to be a part of.
After Hutchinson had detailed her second-hand account of an allegedly irate Trump attempting to grab the steering wheel of the presidential transport to head toward the Capitol instead of the White House, Grisham sought some attention of her own by posting an out-of-context snippet of communication reportedly between herself and Melania.

“Do you want to tweet that peaceful protests are the right of every American, but there is no place for lawlessness & violence?” Grisham asked in the alleged text message.
“No,” responded the first lady. Any discussion that may have led up to the exchange or followed the terse reply was left out of the screenshot.
The allegation itself is certainly not out of step for Grisham who detailed her account of working in the administration in her book, “I’ll Take Your Questions Now: What I Saw at the Trump White House”
In her book, Grisham described how the first lady’s alleged behavior on Jan. 6 led to her decision to resign. She colorfully recounted that she, “finally saw the doomed French queen. Dismissive. Defeated. Detached.”
Melania Trump had been participating in a photo shoot when the Capitol was breached and the outlet specified that White House rugs were the focus. “It broke me. I took a breath and waited another minute. You learned to do that in the Trump White House: make sure you are grounded and not acting out of the moment,” Grisham carried on in her book. “Then I resigned.”
“I sent her an email and cc-ed her senior adviser so I couldn’t take it back or be talked out of it,” she explained. “I was done.”

She later went on to praise Hutchinson while taking another shot at the president’s inner circle on social media.
“The potential witness tampering is no surprise. Trump world is vicious in their smears & well aware that MAGA extremist threaten violence to those who speak out. Proud of Cassidy & all who have chosen to stand up for the truth despite the personal implications,” Grisham tweeted.
Like Hutchinson’s hearsay testimony, which has been called into question by all parties that were there, including Trump himself, Grisham’s narrative on what happened at the White House has repeatedly been debunked as fanciful stories built around the barest grain of truth.

The Intercept’s Robert Mackey had written in response to her book: “Unfortunately, while much of what Grisham writes about the Trumps’ off-screen behavior rings true, her account of what she witnessed in the Trump White House is riddled with factual errors and what appear to be trace elements of cover stories she invented for the press that eventually lodged themselves in her memory, displacing in her mind the contrary evidence of her own eyes and ears.”
So too did a spokesperson for Trump criticize her book: “The intent behind this book is obvious. It is an attempt to redeem herself after a poor performance as press secretary, failed personal relationships, and unprofessional behavior in the White House. Through mistruth and betrayal, she seeks to gain relevance and money at the expense of Mrs. Trump.”
