Michael Steele says GOP would ‘absolutely’ overturn filibuster to pass national abortion ban: ‘They don’t give a rat’s …’

Squishy, pretend-Republican Michael Steele appeared on leftist MSNBC to assert that the GOP would overturn the filibuster to pass a federal ban on abortion if the party takes back the House and Senate in the midterms.

Host Katy Tur teed up the baseless accusation with the former chairman of the Republican National Committee by asking him if he thought the Republicans would go that far.

“Senator Chris Murphy said that if Republicans are able to retake the House and Senate, they will pass a federal ban on abortion. Do you believe that would happen?” she asked Steele.

“Yes. Without hesitation. They will set the marker,” he charged during the segment on Monday.

“Will they overturn the filibuster to do it?” Tur continued.

“Absolutely,” Steele forcefully replied. “Because it’s in their base’s interest to do so. That’s the difference politically between the two parties. Republicans will go, ‘Oh, yeah, the Constitution and the filibuster, all the tradition, the sanctity of the Senate.’ They don’t give a rat’s patootie about that when it’s the bottom line in politics and power.”

“So absolutely, a national ban on abortion will be one of the first pieces of legislation probably next to impeaching Joe Biden,” he posited sounding far more like a Democrat than a Republican.

If Republicans take back control of Congress in the 2022 midterms, as many have predicted, they could in theory pass a ban by lifting the filibuster, a rule requiring bills to get at least 60 votes to pass. However, the White House would veto the move and it is highly unlikely that Republicans would even attempt such a political maneuver.

Following the overturning of Roe vs. Wade by the Supreme Court on Friday, former Vice President Mike Pence immediately called for the abolishment of abortion in every state. However, that is unlikely to happen since the power to decide the issue has now been relegated to the states, not the federal government, and many states still allow the practice.

“Today, Life Won. By overturning Roe vs. Wade, the Supreme Court of the United States has given the American people a new beginning for life, and I commend the justices in the majority for having the courage of their convictions,” Pence tweeted.

“By returning the question of abortion to the states and to the people, this Supreme Court has righted a historic wrong and reaffirmed the right of the American people to govern themselves at the state level in a manner consistent with their values and aspirations,” he continued.

“Now that Roe vs. Wade has been consigned to the ash heap of history, a new arena in the cause of life has emerged, and it is incumbent on all who cherish the sanctity of life to resolve that we will take the defense of the unborn and the support for women in crisis pregnancy centers to every state in America. Having been given this second chance for Life, we must not rest and must not relent until the sanctity of life is restored to the center of American law in every state in the land,” Pence, who is a devout Christian, concluded.
