Republican Arizona gubernatorial candidate Kari Lake reacted strongly when Fox News host Bret Baier confronted her about allegations that she once hosted a drag queen performance in her home in the presence of her young daughter, a smear campaign that has worked its way from local news into the national media.
During an appearance on Monday’s edition of “Special Report with Bret Baier,” the anchor closed the segment with a question about claims by a Phoenix-area transgender stripper who accused Lake of hypocrisy over her criticism of drag queen story hours and other events where young children are exposed to sexual degenerates which have been met with outrage as public awareness has grown.
The allegations made by longtime performer Rich Stevens which were originally reported by the Arizona Republic and allowed to ferment until they were amplified by The Washington Post are being used to kneecap Lake who has been endorsed by former President Donald J. Trump and, according to polls, has a good shot at emerging from the GOP primary victorious, an outcome that clearly is not what the political establishment desires.
In her typical combative style, Lake scorched the Fox News anchor when he went there, ripping the network for giving credence to what she says is a defamatory smear campaign after he asked her if she “cared to address” the allegations.
“I do care, I actually do care to address that and I’m really shocked,” Lake shot back. “I’m actually appalled that Fox News would take a defamatory story like that and we are pursuing legal action against this drag queen, I’m appalled that you would bring that up when you have not talked about our stolen election…”
“We just spent three questions, Miss Lake, talking about this,” huffed Baier as he pushed the Washington Post story to viewers.
“I’m happy to address it but I’m really disappointed in Fox, I thought you were a little better than CNN,” she said. “This is a person who I covered for decades, for decades, twenty years and he’s never been in my home. He says he’s been in my home for a drag show, that’s ludicrous, he’s never been in my home, he’s lied, we tried to serve him defamation papers and he’s so shady that we can’t even track him down because he’s not even welcome at the places that he works.”
“What about these pictures of you with him, Richard Stevens?” Baier persisted, referring to pictures of her standing next to a drag queen as well as from a costume party where Lake, who is dressed up as Elvis Presley, posed with another individual wearing a skeleton mask that Stevens claimed was him.
Baier also read from the WaPo story, giving the drag queen’s account additional credence, talking over Lake who insisted “that’s not true.”
“I don’t want to ask these questions, I want you to address them,” Baier said.
“Actually I think you do want to ask but you don’t want to ask about ‘2000 Mules,’ Lake replied, referring to the Dinesh D’Souza film that makes the case that the 2020 presidential election was rife with fraud. “I think you do want to ask about this. This is absolutely ludicrous, I’m talking about drag shows in schools, this is what triggered this man.”
“Somebody who goes to a drag show with female impersonators is one thing,” she continued. “We don’t want our tax money going into drag shows at schools,” she added, as Baier continued to talk over her to draw attention to the Washington Post story.
Lake insisted that the allegations are false. “I’m really appalled that you would spend time on a false story like that, it’s shocking,” she asserted while Baier continued with his ambush.
“You didn’t ask my opponent, my establishment opponent who was here last week, you didn’t ask her about her votes to allow illegal alien students to get a lower tuition than American students,” Lake said. “You didn’t ask her about the 70+ times that she raised tuition on American students, you didn’t ask her any tough questions and here, you have me on and you try to bring a defamatory story out it’s really sad,” she said as Baier ended the interview.
