With the economy in shambles thanks to devastating inflation and staggeringly high gas prices, the Democrats are latching onto the overturn of Roe v. Wade as the path to their salvation ahead of the midterm elections and that, as Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) indicated Sunday, means treating it as the vehicle to all their other desires by selling the loss of “legitimacy.”
Progressives are not satisfied when their ends aren’t met and they rage on the rare occasion that ground is lost whether it be in the culture war or the fundamental transformation of the United States. So, by affirming the 10th Amendment and decentralizing power from the federal government on the issue of abortion, the Supreme Court’s ruling on Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization is more than just a setback for Democrats – it’s a crisis.
It’s been well-established by the left that crises ought not to go to waste and in her appearance on ABC’s “This Week” Sunday, Warren told host Martha Raddatz that the Dobbs decision “set a torch” to the reputation of the court and the only way to bring it back is through court-packing.
“This court has lost legitimacy. They have burned whatever legitimacy they may still have had after their gun decision, after their voting decision, after their union decision. They just took the last of it and set a torch to it with the Roe v. Wade opinion,” Warren declared. “I believe we need to get some confidence back in our court, and that means we need more justices on the United States Supreme Court.”

Warren has been holding firm to the idea that the best bet for Democrats leading into November is to ram through all of their policies despite the nearly deadlocked Congress. Her continued denial of reality espoused that holding true to the Constitution was actually the extremist view and that Republicans have been conducting machinations toward this end for some time.
“I do know this, that the Republicans have been very overt about trying to get people through the court who didn’t have a published record on Roe, but who they knew — wink-wink, nod-nod — were going to be extremist on the issue of Roe v. Wade,” she argued, “and that is exactly what we have ended up with.”
The Massachusetts lawmaker wasn’t alone in this radical plan to capitalize on the overturning of Roe. It was reported that other extreme ideas included holding trials to investigate the conservative members of the court and to impeach them in a blatantly political move.
At the same time, Warren joined 32 of her Senate colleagues in a letter Saturday pressing President Joe Biden to take executive actions toward establishing the so-called “right to abortion” as federal law against the will of the people from the myriad states who have outlawed the practice through the guaranteed protections of the Constitution.
It remains to be seen what actions the Democrats will take on the issue, but it is clear that they are serious on the matter. During his error-laden speech Friday following the ruling, Biden got ahead of the anticipated violent protests for a change and decried any harmful acts as he urged only peaceful protests. They want to win on this issue and a victory wouldn’t be complete without furthering the progressive agenda by means like expanding the court.
“It happened before,” Warren reminded as the court grew from six to nine justices. “We’ve done it before, we need to do it again.”
