Amidst her outspoken pro-abortion activism, U.S. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) might want to take a few minutes to brush up on basic civics and history.
As part of a 10-tweet rant, AOC misinformed her 13 million Twitter followers about how many justices serve on the U.S. Supreme Court and the circumstances surrounding their nominations.
Lamenting the overturning of Roe v. Wade, AOC — a far-left politician who Fox News host Tucker Carlson refers to as “Sandy from Westchester,” apparently as a way to call attention to the upscale suburban neighborhood where she grew up in contrast to the working-class Bronx-area district that she represents — offered this shorthand insight:
“Here’s how Dems can [and] must do more than wait for an election. Let’s start w/ why: – 7 of the 9 justices were appointed by a party that hasn’t won a popular vote more than once in 30 years – 1 of those seats was stolen – Several lied to Congress to secure their appointment…”

Since the draft opinion in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization written by Justice Samuel Alitio leaked in early May, and common sense suggests that the tweet, and other ones, may have been pre-planned as a result, AOC (or whoever is running her account) had plenty of time to do a fact-check.
Apart from the fact that there are currently six conservative justices among the nine total, under the U.S. Constitution, winning a majority in the Electoral College obviously determines who becomes president.
President Trump, who did lose the popular vote to Hillary Clinton in 2016, appointed Neil Gorsuch, Brett Kavanaugh, and Amy Coney Barret to the high court. But that’s as far as AOC’s logic goes.
President George W. Bush, wo won the popular vote over John Kerry in 2004, nominated both Alito and John Roberts in 2005. Clarence Thomas “meanwhile, was appointed in 1991 by President George H.W. Bush, who won the popular vote in 1988. Like Alito and Roberts, Thomas was also approved with the support of some Democrats, albeit by a much smaller margin,” the Washington Examiner recalled.
“Representatives for Ocasio-Cortez did not respond to the Washington Examiner’s request for comment on her popular vote assertion,” the news outlet added.
Among other things, AOC also smeared two justices as being “very credibly accused of sexual assault.”
AOC went on to say that the Supreme Court decision has prompted a “legitimacy crisis” because it is overreaching, and that Democrats must do more than use this “crisis in democracy” as a mere fundraising opportunity.
In a legitimacy crisis, the solution Biden + Dem leaders must offer can’t just be one of voting, but of statute & authority.

Alluding to President Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s failed attempt at court packing, AOC’s tweetstorm provided a call to action for Democrats, which includes “restrain judicial review, open clinics on federal lands, court expansion,” and “expand fed access/awareness of pill abortions.”
She claimed — perhaps ironically — that “details motivate.”

AOC, who is very skillful in generating publicity, like her or not, is the same lawmaker who has bemoaned the limitations of her $174,000 congressional salary and has also complained about her outstanding student loan debt.
According to the Democratic Socialists of America website, Ocasio-Cortez “is DSA’s foremost socialist superstar.”
In the meantime, progressive AOC and pro-life U.S. Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) are feuding on social media as to whether the former is engaging in insurrection.
