All hell breaks loose over former MO governor’s ‘RINO Hunting Permit’ ad; Twitter quick to censor

The latest campaign ad from former Missouri Gov. Eric Greitens in his bid for an open Senate seat in the Republican primary drew massive criticism Monday from the right and left after he declared open season for “RINO hunting.”

Greitens, who resigned from his executive position in 2018 amid scandals after serving nearly 17 months of a four-year term, used the 38-second spot to distance himself from establishment members of Congress. However, the ad was perceived as a literal violent threat from a politician whose reputation of civility has been questioned.

“Today we’re going RINO hunting,” the former Navy SEAL declared, before racking his shotgun that he carries throughout the campaign spot.

Flanked by men in armor, the ad continued with the former governor on a porch stating in hushed tones, “The RINO feeds on corruption and is marked by the stripes of cowardice.”

The group of men then reenacted a breach using a handheld battering ram to break in the door before seemingly releasing a flash-bang grenade and securing the interior. It is then that Greitens entered the room stating, “Join the MAGA crew. Get a RINO Hunting Permit. There’s no bagging limit, no tagging limit and it doesn’t expire until we save our country.”

There were scores of social media users retweeting the ad with captions about threats to murder political opponents and the “sick and dangerous” nature of the implication with one person even writing, “Fascists are really out here threatening other fascists for not being fascist enough.”

However, a great many other posts brought the allegations that were made against Greitens that led to his resignation in 2018. He had admitted to an extramarital affair but denied accusations that he had sexually assaulted his mistress or taken nude photos of her without her consent. As reported by The Hill, the governor had “also been accused of abusing his ex-wife Sheena Greitens, who said that her ex-husband grew physically violent with her and her children.”

“She shared disturbing details including that Eric Greitens bought a gun, hid it from his family and threatened to kill himself if his then-wife did not provide ‘specific public political support’ prior to his resignation,” the outlet continued.

Greitens has called out RINOs before, challenging Republican strategist Karl Rove and Senate Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) by name in March stating, “You are disgusting cowards and we are coming for you. We are no longer going to allow you – not just to attack me and attack my kids, but to destroy this country, and that’s what you’re doing. You’re making life hard for millions of families around this country by cooperating with the left, by stabbing President Trump in the back, by stabbing the people of America in the back, and we’re not gonna stand for it anymore.”

Sen. Josh Hawley reacted to the allegations made against Greitens tweeting, “If you hit a woman or a child, you belong in handcuffs, not the United States Senate. It’s time for Eric Greitens to leave this race.”

The former governor also took criticism from conservatives who were more than willing to point out his record on the Second Amendment and that fact that he was a Democrat until 2015.
