Bill Maher likes DeSantis over Trump for president: ‘He’s not certifiably insane’

Liberal comedian Bill Maher somewhat defended firebrand Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis on Friday, arguing that it’d be better to have him in office than former President Donald Trump.

Keep in mind though that he offered the defense more-so as an attack on Trump than anything else.

He posited the defense after one of his guests, liberal commentator Krystal Ball, questioned the idea that merely prosecuting Trump would solve this nation’s political problems.

“I actually have no issue with Trump being prosecuted, and I have a lot of issue with elites being left unaccountable for the crimes that they commit, number one. Number two, that’s not going to solve our problem. Do you think that Ron DeSantis is going to be way better than Donald Trump?”

“Yes, I do!” Maher promptly replied.

This troubled Ball.

“I don’t know how you can say that, because he’s clearly modeled himself in the footsteps of Donald Trump,” she replied.

Maher staunchly disagreed.

“He’s not certifiably insane. That’s a great one to start off with. You know what Ron DeSantis won’t be doing? He won’t be a poop tweeting every day. He won’t be, like, having feuds with Bette Midler on Twitter. He’s not an insane person,” he said.

Ball still wasn’t convinced.

“You have to ask yourself the question, Bill, how did we get to this place. Trump is a symptom of a deep rot in our system,” she said.

“But he also committed the crime. He robbed the liquor store,” Maher replied, presumably referencing the Jan. 6th riot.

This isn’t the first time Maher has come to DeSantis’ defense.

In March he defended DeSantis’ Parental Rights in Education bill from the left’s “Don’t Say Gay” smear.

A month later, he praised DeSantis for his successful COVID response.

“I’ve read that the governor of Florida reads. I know we like to think of Florida as only middle school teachers on bath salts having sex with their students in front of an alligator but apparently the governor is also a voracious consumer of the scientific literature. And maybe that’s why he protected his most vulnerable population the elderly way better than did the governor of New York,” he said.

That being said, some members of his left-wing base don’t appreciate him praising DeSantis and saying he’d be better than Trump.

Look:

FYI, despite Maher’s base calling DeSantis “dangerous,” “evil,” a “bully,” and a “dictator,” he’s in fact among the top 10 most popular governors in America, according to Morning Consult. In fact, every top 10 governor is a Republican, and that doesn’t seem like a coincidence.

Maher’s words Friday were also not the first time — probably not even the 10th time — that he’d trashed Trump. From the day Trump announced his candidacy in 2015, Maher and other liberals have been tearing into him at every opportunity.

Yet despite the liberal comedian’s animosity for the former president, Trump still remains the most likely Republican to win the 2024 GOP presidential nomination, according to numerous polls.

“Former President Donald Trump’s kingmaker status may be under scrutiny following a spate of recent losses by his endorsees in 2022 midterm election primaries, but a new Morning Consult/Politico survey suggests he remains firmly in control of the millions of Republican voters nationwide who would ultimately matter most come 2024,” Morning Consult confirmed earlier this month.
