Eric Swalwell’s cocky tweet claiming ‘lunatic’ Ben Shapiro a ‘reason for red flag laws’ comes back to bite

Establishment Republicans are a middling lot who have attained and retained their side of the Capitol Hill power dynamic by ostensibly doing the least amount of work to further the agenda of the right while acting like a sieve against the unrelenting pressure of their progressive opposition.

So, as the RINOs of the party slide toward the left courtesy of the Overton Window, it only seems appropriate that, where Democrats so often have their own past statements raised to dispute their current posturing, Republican leaders would get slammed for straying from conservative values by a gun-grabbing ideologue.

In 2019, Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-Calif.) had his eyes on a 2020 presidential bid and chose to stand out from the pack by declaring himself “the only candidate proposing that we ban and buy back every single assault weapon in this nation.” Later that same year he touted the need for the kind of red flag laws that 10 Republican lawmakers just agreed to help fund, and defenders of the Second Amendment are making certain to slam those senators for their obvious betrayal.

“Did you see this promise from a leading Democrat that he would use ‘red flag’ laws to silence conservative opponents?” Townhall columnist Kurt Schlichter asked, tagging Republican Sens. John Cornyn (Texas) and Leader Mitch McConnell (Ky.) while retweeting Swalwell’s post from 2019 where he called The Daily Wire’s Ben Shapiro a lunatic for supporting the right to self-defense.

“Did you also see how naked Hunter got a pass from the DOJ on his clear gun crimes?” he went on, emphasizing how the left only sees the need to enforce laws against their opposition.

Others dredged up the post as well, shining light on what Democrats actually mean when they say they are looking for a compromise on gun legislation.

Ben Shapiro responded when he got wind of the resurfaced tweet:

Cornyn was last reelected in 2020 and so is safe from facing any imminent ire from voters and as such remained smug in his self-righteous stance that threatens the rights his constituents sent him to Washington, D.C. to protect.

When challenged on what explanation he would provide for red flag laws being the concern of the federal government by The Federalist’s David Harsanyi, he fired back with a link to an explanation that “the proposal provides federal funding for states to enact fed flag laws but doesn’t enact any federal red flag laws.”

“Oh, you’re not supporting red flag laws, you’re just spending millions and millions of dollars of our money to support and enact red flag laws?” Sean Davis, also of the Federalist railed. “Embarrassing attempt at spin here.”

As former Acting Director of National Intelligence Ric Grenell pointed out, “They’ve told us who they are – believe them!”

After pandemic lockdowns and the unwillingness of lawmakers to give up their emergency powers and months of the political witch hunt of the January 6 committee, proponents of the Second Amendment have every reason to suspect that Democrats will take any modicum of authority granted to them to trample on the rights of the American people. Unfortunately, it looks as though there are some charged with standing in their way who are instead helping to erode the Constitution.

  1. How is telling states “we will pay you to enact red flag laws” any better than doing it directly?

  2. Somebody needs to tell Swalwell that it’s better to keep your ignorant mouth shut, than to open it and remove all doubt as to your idiocy. I didn’t hear him say much about the Chinese spy he was sleeping with, so anything he says now is just pure noise to me.. Typical California democrat. Put his brain beside Shapiro’s, and that would prove a lot. Shapiro is one smart man and Swalwell, well not so much. He has proven just how lacking he is in the “Smarts” dept. He and AOC both, IMO.

  3. Swalwell is the moronic and sinister Congressman who slept with a Chinese spy, so what sort of fool believes he has any sense?

  4. This government and it’s minions tried to put people on a “no fly” list, tried to PUBLICLY shame and successfully threw people out of their careers for not taking a vaccine. Imagine what they will do with “red flag laws” they can corrupt just as fast. NO. NO. NO.

    1. You’re not suppose to associate all of those things and certainly not associate them with Dems.

  5. Considering Hilary labeled us all as a basket of deplorable, Nancy says we’re all creatures, want to bet they get to determine we all need to be stripped of guns.
