Public safety in crime-ridden New York City could get even worse from a wave of police force retirements, which is reportedly on track to be “the biggest exodus of officers since the statistics have been available.”
According to the New York Post, 1,500-plus cops have left the NYPD this year alone through May 31, with about one-third of those stepping down through pre-retirement resignations apparently in favor of better law enforcement opportunities elsewhere, resulting in the Big Apple’s force being understaffed.
A similar phenomenon has replicated itself throughout the country, as disillusioned big-city cops have submitted their papers.
“The 1,596 total is a 38% spike from the same period in 2021, when 1,159 cops called it a career, and a staggering 46% climb from 2020, when 1,092 left the force by the same date,” the Post claimed.
“Anti-cop hostility, bail reform, and rising crime have fed into frustration among the NYPD rank and file, according to one NYPD officer who recently fled for greener pastures at a Long Island police department after 6 1/2 years with the New York’s Finest,” the Post added, alluding to New York’s disastrous catch-and-release, so-called bail reform law.
“The city is out of control — especially since bail reform,” that cop told the news outlet.

NYPD officers can retire with full pension benefits after about 20 years on the job (some jurisdictions require 25 years), at which time they can collect 50 percent of their final average salary, but apparently a significant cohort has decided against reaching that vesting milestone.
Cops also can get credit towards their NYPD pension for military service The mandatory NYPD retirement age is 63, although it seems unlikely that anyone other than the top brass hangs around that long.
Unless they are joining another department, cops often pursue a lucrative second career in private-security-aligned fields.
“Last year the number of cops who quit before becoming eligible for their full pension was the highest in two decades. This year we are on pace for the highest ever recorded,” a source told the Post.
The NYPD is also reportedly encountering recruitment woes, with the latest police academy class only filling about two-thirds of the available seats.
According to the NYPD website, rookie officers earn $42,5000 to start, with pay rising to $85,00 after 5-1/2 years, plus an array of benefits, including unlimited paid sick leave. “Including holiday pay, longevity pay, uniform allowance, night differential and overtime, police officers may potentially earn over $100,000 per year.”
Democrat Eric Adams, a former NYPD captain, was elected mayor in November 2021, in part, on a law-and-order platform. So far, however, he seems to be more interested in pursuing a celebrity lifestyle rather than effectively addressing street violence. A new poll claims that Adams’ approval rate has collapsed to just 29 percent.
Woke Democrats who control the state legislature have so far rebuffed Adams’ call to reform the bail reform law.
The same poll indicated that nearly 60 percent of New Yorkers think the city is headed in the wrong direction, and 76 percent worry that they could themselves become violent crime victims.
“The NYPD is sliding deeper into a staffing crisis that will ultimately hurt public safety,” police union president Patrick Lynch declared.
“Adams and the NYPD have struggled to curb gun violence ahead of the hot summer months — traditionally the most violent in New York City…In response, Adams has rolled out so-called Neighborhood Safety Teams, a revamped version of the controversial anti-crime units that were disbanded in 2020,” the Post separately reported last week.
