10 GOP senators join with Dems in breakthrough gun control bill; Mitch McConnell praises ‘hard work’

A bipartisan coalition of 10 Democrat senators and 10 Republican senators announced a “breakthrough agreement on gun violence” early Sunday afternoon, and President Joe Biden has already signaled that he’s itching to sign it into law.

“I want to thank Senator Chris Murphy and the members of his bipartisan group—especially Senators Cornyn, Sinema, and Tillis—for their tireless work to produce this proposal. Obviously, it does not do everything that I think is needed, but it reflects important steps in the right direction, and would be the most significant gun safety legislation to pass Congress in decades,” the president said.

“With bipartisan support, there are no excuses for delay, and no reason why it should not quickly move through the Senate and the House. Each day that passes, more children are killed in this country: the sooner it comes to my desk, the sooner I can sign it, and the sooner we can use these measures to save lives.”

According to a Twitter thread posted by Democrat Sen. Chris Murphy, who apparently is the lead member of the coalition, the bill will, among other things, fund red flag laws, provide money for mental health and school safety, close the “boyfriend loophole,” and require enhanced background checks for gun purchasers under 21.

It’ll also institute the first-ever “federal law against gun trafficking and straw purchasing.”

Despite what Murphy wrote in his final tweet about the difficulty of “drafting” and “passing” the bill, the fact remains that so long as 10 Senate Republicans remain aboard, the bill will absolutely make it through Congress.

The reason why is because Democrats only need the support of 10 Republicans to push it through the Senate. As for the House, Democrats need zero support from their political opponents to move any piece of legislation.

Plus, according to incoming reports, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, also a Republican, has signaled his own support for the bill:

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, a Democrat, has also expressed support for the bill.

“After an unrelenting wave of gun-related suicides and homicides, including mass shootings, the Senate is poised to act on commonsense reforms to protect Americans where they live, where they shop, and where they learn. We must move swiftly to advance this legislation because if a single life can be saved it is worth the effort,” he said in a statement cited by NBC News.

The ten Republicans in the bipartisan coalition include Sens. John Cornyn, Thom Tillis, Susan Collins, Bill Cassidy, Lindsey Graham, Pat Toomey, Roy Blunt, Richard Burr, Rob Portman, and Mitt Romney.

The ten Democrats meanwhile include Sens. Murphy, Kyrsten Sinema, Joe Manchin, Chris Coons, Martin Heinrich, Richard Blumenthal, Cory Booker, Mark Kelly, Angus King, and Debbie Stabenow.

Backlash is already beginning to brew against the 10 Republicans who participated in the coalition:

    1. I thought the Second Amendment to the Constitution made it clear that no government shall infringe on gun ownership. They can’t change this or take away our guns. They can make background checks to offset who should be capable of owning a gun because some people are mental granted. But all in all, these laws they have been doing for years never addresses the real problem. That is criminals will never obey laws and can lay their hands on illegal guns no matter the laws. These laws are only hurting legal gun owners. I feel that until they address the real issue and close that loophole, they will never see these events cease from happening. I don’t agree with red flag laws for they lead to people that have something against someone else, they just report it and the authorities come in and confiscate legal gun owner’s guns. We should never agree with red flag laws. I hope commonsense people vote out the Rhinos who are in the Republican party and replace them with commonsense people. Our lawmakers on both sides of the aisle are all greedy, corrupt, and been in office far too long. Very few deserve to be re-elected.

  1. My only question is HOW WILL YOU GET THE CRIMINALS TO GET THE GUNS FROM A GUN STORE???? YOU FRIGGEN MORONS.

  2. Nancy, the insane demon, will never let it be brought up in the House. It’s dead on arrival, because she will spread her stench via gun grabbing amendments, on purpose. She can’t afford to let anyone see that the GOP is behind sensible gun laws.

  3. I’m a bit puzzled, Strawman purchases have been illegal since the GCA of 1968 so what is different here. Could this make giving a gun as a gift a straw purchase?
Red Flag laws? To “temporarily” remove guns. So exactly what is temporarily, A week? A month? A Year?
I keep hearing this term “enhanced background checks” but what does that mean exactly? A background check relies on input from local, state and federal agencies and they all have been notoriously lax in submitting disqualifying information.
Clarification of rules regarding who needs a FFL? Sounds like they are going after non dealers who sell a few personally owned firearms at gun shows.
Most of these sound relatively benign but the devil is in the details. Do you trust these bastards? I dont.
Remember the law implementing the instant background checks has a provision mandating that the information NOT be kept, approve and discard the information. Do you believe that is what is happening?

  4. Mitch McConnell is a POS. He has let down his party. He is too weak and has no beliefs. Mitch McConnell needs to retire with his tail between his legs like the coward that he is. He does not need to lead anyone, he should be ashamed of himself. Mitch go back and read the Constitution you sorry piece of trash. I would really like to know what the democrats have on him to make him turn on his party like this. How much was it worth Mitch? How much was your payoff?

  5. First off, I am not very pleased with Sen Cornyn, but he has been siding with the Dims for a long time. Secondly, the Red Flag law is a scary one…if and only if it used as is intended and not abused! The third Item is “clarification on who is to licensed to sell fireams”. The ATF Regulations already state that anyone in the business of selling firearms must be licensed. This does not preclude a person from making a private party sale from time to time, which is the way it should be. If they were to add that the PPS had to go through an FFL Dealer I wouldn’t have too much heartburn with that.
There is no telling what the final outcome of these suggestions will be…we can only hope for the best plus keep contacting your Representatives and Senators, if i will do any good!

    1. It is funding the States Red Flag laws that is for sure the biggest problem. You know it will be abused. Leftist groups will seek out gun owners and file baseless complaints against them. Once their guns have been confiscated they will never get them back. All the Senators who put this together think because they are only supplying money to states to fund individual RF laws they can pass the buck. Primary them all I say.

  6. This bipartisanship shows a total ignorance by our politicians as to what the US Constitution says. 10 republicans join in with the corrupt democrats to take away law abiding citizens ability to defend themselves. They have their armed guards to protect them but the rest of us are shit out of luck.

  7. Anything about trafficking guns left in Afghanistan that will surely make their way into the U.S.? Anything about shutting down the border, where 800,000 known got aways, and counting, made it into the U.S. who knows what kind of firepower they’re carrying.

  8. It’ll also institute the first-ever “federal law against gun trafficking and straw purchasing.”

More Democrat and MSM lies. Both of these things have been illegal since the gun control act of 1968. Illegal to engage in the business of selling firearms without and FFL, illegal to sell a firearm to a resident of another state and as it says right on form 4473 illegal to buy a gun on behalf of another person.

  9. To Raymiller. Yes, Mr. Turtle Man (to use the word man in conjunction with him is a colossal insult) is a trader. He is an embarrassment to the human race. He should leave.

  10. The Turtle needs to go at the first opportunity, I’m sick of him running rough shod over what the people want, FU Mitch.

  11. They will pass this latest version of a Dim-witted panacea that will change nothing. The criminals will still have guns, the law will be ignored by all of the police responsible for enforcement – as have been all previous magic bullets – and they’ll be all patting each others backs until the next drive-by or school massacre.

  12. Let’s enact this law in Philly, Baltimore, Chicago, DC, and LA. After 6 months review the results…

    1. Yes, the criminals will ALWAYS have access to illegal weapons. Always have and always will.

  13. Yet again, these RINO senators have “outed” themselves. When will their constituents finally demand that they get primaryed, so that America First patriots can take their places?

  14. There will be more than 10 Traitors. They are all afraid of the the DEM /BLM/ANTIFA mobs showing up at their house. SCOTUS has been rendered useless, & is cowering in fear as well.

  15. That P O S Portman doesn’t care what he does anymore since he’ll be retiring. He’s f k d Ohioans for years now.

  16. Every 18-20 year old needs to get together now to file a class action discrimination lawsuit against this government

  17. WHEN GUNS ARE OUTLAWED , ONLY OUTLAWS WILL HAVE GUNS!! WITH THIS GOVERNMENT MAYBE THE OUTLAWS ARE THE PEOPLE WE SHOULD SUPPORT, BECAUSE THE GOVERNMENT IS A BIGGER OUTLAW.. WE SEE IT EVERYDAY, AND HUNTER GETS AWAY WITH IT TOO.

    1. The people will be the outlaws. The govt. intends on it. If they have 10 traitors they have enough votes to ratify the UN AAT Small Arms Treaty. Commies are coverin’ their ass big time.

  18. I agree. These backstabbers must be purged from the party. Nothing is ever enough for the left. Give into their demands a little today and tomorrow they want more. Screw them. The RINP ten must go.
If the libs don’t want to live by our Constitution, get the f out of our country. Go live in Australia or England. Go anywhere, but not here.

  19. mcconnell has become the yugist backstabber ever! There seems to be more of these rino s turning up…….they need to be VOTED OUT for other republicans to take over.

    1. You are correct, but sadly division in the party will just leave DEM’s in charge.
Remember, they cheat anyway, all the time. Do you really think that many people voted Obama in? We just weren’t watchin’ as close then.

  20. Already sent a message to my Senator (Cornyn) saying “Don’t bother to run for re-election and don’t bother to return to Texas you RINO hypocrite.”

    1. The problem is they never primary him, so your choices are Cornyn or the democrap.

    2. Even though he is not named, I can assure Sen. Young from Indiana will vote yes. He is scared of the commies & will play along to keep his seat at the table.

  21. The “shot heard around the world” would be to vote everyone of these RINOs out of office as their terms expire!
