Enraged mother of slain vet shreds Manhattan DA Alvin Bragg for cutting plea deals in case

The mother of an Army veteran who was stabbed to death in Harlem four years ago is blasting Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg for deciding to cut plea deals with two defendants in her son’s murder.

Madeline Brame, who is the mother of Hason Correa, sent a letter to Bragg and Gov. Kathy Hochul expressing her outrage over the politically motivated deals, according to the New York Post. She claims that the DA didn’t tell her about the plea deals before they were offered to the defendants. Those deals allowed one of her son’s alleged killers to be released after time served.

“You violated my rights as a crime victim to be fully informed, and to be heard,” Brame slammed the New York Democrats in her letter that was sent Thursday. “Why would you dismiss murder charges against half of the participants when the murder and their roles were caught on video?”

The distraught mother had previously called on Bragg to do his job concerning her son’s murder or step down and let someone else capable of handling it take over. Brame flatly told him that she was not interested in his social justice in February of this year.

“The mothers, the families of these victims care nothing about social justice theories. We care about restoring law and order to our city,” she raged at the time.

Correa was only 35 when his life was taken from him. He was a married dad of three children.

The young veteran was allegedly beaten and stabbed to death in October of 2018 by Travis Stewart, Mary Saunders and her two brothers, James and Chris Saunders.

Authorities believed that Mary Saunders punched and kicked Correa before attempting to pin him while her brothers stabbed him. They reportedly chased him when he tried to get away.

Prosecutors contended in May that they didn’t think they could prove beyond a reasonable doubt that Mary Saunders had intended to kill Correa, or that she knew her brother had a knife used to stab the vet.

They argued that her behavior during the altercation “supports her contention” that she never meant to murder Correa. Prosecutors claimed that the evidence showed her presence during the incident “was not a determining factor” in Correa’s death.

In her plea agreement, Saunders pleaded guilty to felony assault and was then released on time served after a year in jail while awaiting trial.

Travis Stewart pleaded guilty to attempted gang assault. He will reportedly get seven years in prison when sentenced on June 29, according to his plea deal with Bragg’s office.

Correa’s mother tore into Bragg’s team over the deals, accusing them of not consulting her before downgrading the charges against the two defendants in the case. Prosecutors did not meet with Brame until two days before the plea deals were finalized in court. They didn’t meet or speak with her at all before the deals were cut.

“You and your office chose to not meaningfully consult our family that you were going to dismiss the murder charges against two of the people… until after you agreed to that deal with the attorneys representing the defendants,” Brame angrily wrote in her letter.

“Why did you not want the Judge to hear our voice? Why did you not want the public to hear what our family thought about the dismissal of murder charges against two individuals who, the prior administration and homicide prosecutors said, were clearly responsible?” she demanded.

Prosecutors noted that Brame was “not in agreement with this disposition.”

“[Brame] is opposed to it and believes Ms. Saunders should be prosecuted for murder … and should be remanded,” Assistant District Attorney Dafna Yoran said during the hearing.

“The video, the facts, the evidence, and the law about the murder did not change in three years – the only thing that changed was the District Attorney,” Brame charged according to Fox News. “Our family and our community deserve better.”

James and Chris Saunders are still being held without bail in the murder of Correa. They will go on trial for killing him in the next few months.
