Biden unravels peace process in Middle East…rolls back Trump policy on Palestinians

Following the brutal stabbing deaths of three Israelis in May, President Joe Biden has decided to restore communications with Palestinian terrorists by opening a “U.S. Office of Palestinian Affairs” in Jerusalem.

The move is another attempt to undo former President Donald Trump’s highly acclaimed and successful measures employed in the Middle East to bring about peace. Trump closed the U.S. consulate for the Palestinians in Israel’s holy city and now Biden is apparently rewarding terrorists by partially reinstating it ahead of a possible visit to Israel.

The Middle East pivot by Biden comes after a wave of terrorism where two Palestinians used an ax and a knife to murder three Israelis in Elad last month. The month before that, Raad Hazem, who was a 28-year-old Palestinian gunman from Jenin, killed three people and wounded six others in a crowded bar in Tel Aviv.

“We had a consul-general in West Jerusalem for decades dedicated to Palestinian affairs, which meant Palestinians had to cross into West Jerusalem for any consular affairs related to the United States,” Victoria Coates, who was a former deputy national security adviser for the Middle East and North Africa under the Trump administration, told Fox News Digital.

“Since 2018, their affairs have been handled by a proper U.S. Embassy, which also happens to be in West Jerusalem. This unnecessary change with the Palestinians will only prolong the stalemate between them and Israel and will not bring us any closer to peace than the old ConGen [consulate-general] did [before Trump],” she asserted.

“The Biden administration is reverting to past failed practices,” Danny Danon, who is the Chairman of the World Likud, also told Fox News Digital. “Although the announced changes are essentially bureaucratic in nature, with amendments to names and reporting lines, it is the symbolism of the move which hits home for some. It signals an upgrade in relations with the possibility of more fruitless promises to come.”

“The Abraham Accords moved beyond broken paradigms and looked for new solutions,” Danon noted. “This new path has been astoundingly successful. It is perhaps time for the current U.S. administration to cast aside past failed policies and look to set new, sound strategy.”

The Trump administration negotiated historic agreements to normalize diplomatic relations between Israel and the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Sudan, and Morocco. That set the Middle East on a path to peace that had not been in place before. Now Biden is ostensibly beginning to undo that peace in favor of Palestinian terrorists to apparently mollify his radical base.

The backdoor move will be met with severe opposition by our allies in the Israeli government because it allegedly undercuts the holy city as the undivided capital of Israel. Jerusalem is suggesting that the U.S. open its Palestinian consulate in Ramallah, the headquarters of the Palestine Liberation Organization and the Palestine Authority.

“Having been unable to force upon Israel their plan to open a consulate to the Palestinians in Jerusalem, this is a transparent attempt by the Biden administration to go round the back door, with a de facto consulate in clear attempt to water down the Trump administration’s recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital,” Arsen Ostrovsky, who is an Israeli human rights attorney and the chairman and CEO of the International Legal Forum, told Fox News.

“The move, a direct challenge to Israel’s sovereignty, which potentially might also breach the Jerusalem Embassy Act, will only reward Palestinian intransigence and violence, as we have seen in the past months,” he charged.

The U.S. Jerusalem Embassy Act of 1995 recognizes Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and calls for it to remain an undivided city, something the left has been working arduously to undermine and change.

The change in policy means that Palestinians will now directly work with the U.S. State Department in D.C. rather than go through the American ambassador to Israel.

The State Department has decided to rename the Palestinian Affairs Unit the U.S. Office of Palestinian Affairs. In a statement, the office said the change was meant to “strengthen our diplomatic reporting and public diplomacy engagement,” according to the Associated Press.

“We felt that it was important to reintroduce separate reporting lines to Washington on Israeli and Palestinian issues by our respective teams on the ground that focus on these issues,” the statement asserted. It also said, in an attempt to invalidate the former president’s policies, that the U.S. was reinstating a system that was in place for decades before Trump came along.

On Thursday, Palestinian officials hosted U.S. State Department envoy Hady Amr in Ramallah, their seat of government in the West Bank, according to Reuters.

A senior Palestinian official told the media outlet that in a call with the U.S. Secretary of State several days ago, President Mahmoud Abbas rejected any alternatives to the reopening of the U.S. consulate in Jerusalem.

The Biden administration has pledged to reopen the consulate, but Israel has said it would not consent to it.
