Brits greet Prince Harry, Meghan Markle with vigorous boos, other royals cheered at Platinum Jubilee

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle were vigorously booed by Brits as they departed St. Paul’s Cathedral following the Service of Thanksgiving, while other royals were notably cheered on Friday.

The couple attended the celebration which was part of Her Majesty’s Platinum Jubilee. It is the first time in two years they have attended a royal event. Harry’s brother, Prince William, and his wife Kate notably sat far away from the couple inside the cathedral giving substance to their allegedly frosty relations.

As the duke and duchess made their way down the steps from the cathedral to an awaiting car, loud boos could be heard. However, when Prince William and Kate Middleton appeared, the exact opposite occurred, according to Fox News. They were reportedly lavished with cheers from the people.

The boos apparently were loud enough that Sky News commentator Rhiannon Mills said the negative reaction from the British shouldn’t be surprising. She mentioned that the couple had become unpopular in the UK because of the prevailing view that they “snubbed” the queen by not giving her sufficient notice before they went public in January 2020 with their plans to step away from royal duties and move to North America, according to Mercury News.

Markle, 40, was decked out in a monochrome cream outfit. Her outfit was accessorized with closed-toe pumps, a tilted hat, and gloves. Prince Harry sported his medals and a long sports coat with gray slacks.

The Queen’s celebration started Thursday with Trooping the Colour and the lighting of the beacons. Friday’s main event was the Service of Thanksgiving, which occurred in the morning. Queen Elizabeth was absent due to “some discomfort” she experienced on Thursday.

Britain is celebrating 70 years of rule under Queen Elizabeth II’s reign. This celebration follows silver, gold, and diamond Jubilee celebrations that took place in 1977, 2002, and 2012, marking 25, 50, and 60 years on the throne.

Events for the celebration began on June 2 and will continue through June 5.

In addition to Prince Harry, and Meghan Markle,  royal family members in attendance included Prince Charles, Prince William, Kate Middleton, and Prince Andrew was absent after ostensibly testing positive for COVID.

Lord lieutenants were in attendance to represent every country in the UK. Also at the prestigious affair were the prime minister, members of the cabinet, the first minister of the devolved governments, and leaders of the opposition, as well as former prime ministers. Prime Minister Boris Johnson was also booed upon arrival.

Reps from overseas territories and governors-general, among others, also made the trek for the event.

Only one-third of British citizens (32 percent) reportedly support the Duke of Sussex and less than a quarter (23 percent) of them approve of his wife, according to a YouGov survey.

Another survey by JL Partners for The Telegraph mirrors that sentiment, finding that just 27 percent of British adults hold a positive opinion of Harry, while only 22 percent support Meghan Markle.

The queen remains the most respected royal with eight in 10 British citizens supporting the 96-year-old monarch, according to YouGov.

  1. More boos than anything. Harry has turned into such a whoosey. He gave up his family, military and everything for this gold digger.

  2. Is it small and mean of me to hope this really hurt Meghan’s feelings, thereby diminishing her ego at least a little bit? If the answer is yes, I’m OK with that.

  3. If the “Markles” expected a warm welcome, they shouldn’t have! You can’t turn your back on your country, especially one that has paid for you to live a pampered life, and expect to be revered. What’s not to understand about that?

  4. I don’t follow this crap, but I thought this was funny. But, what am I missing? Does the writer refer to him as both a “Duke” and a “Prince”? And I thought, due to his voluntary departure from the royal family, he wasn’t supposed to be referred to with royal titles anymore, nor wear any symbols (medals) he acquired as a royal? All this British stuff gets confusing, lol.

  5. Harry’s going to be in the dog house with the Brits as long as he has that pile of dung on his arm.
