Depp interacts with fans outside court, says in iconic Jack Sparrow voice: ‘He’s still around… I see him now and again’

Amidst the ongoing defamation trial pitting Johnny Depp against Amber Heard, the actor appeared in high spirits while briefly interacting with fans and offering them a momentary glimpse back at one of his most beloved characters.

As spectators continue to flock to the courthouse to show their support and adoration for the nearly 55-year-old actor, Depp has rewarded them with cause to do so. Such was the case earlier this week when, while departing the trial, he was filmed using the affected speech of his iconic “Pirates of the Caribbean” character Captain Jack Sparrow to the delight of onlookers.

Peeking out the window from the backseat of his chauffeured SUV, the actor smiled and waved at fans and responded to a comment or two. At one point, while cheers were heard off screen, a person called out to Depp and said, “You’ll always be the Captain Jack Sparrow.”

Without missing a beat, the actor transitioned into the cadence of the oft-drunk pirate adventurer and replied, “He’s still around somewhere. I see him now and again. He shows up now and again.”

Sparrow is considered to be one of the many casualties in the ongoing dispute between Depp and ex-wife Heard as Disney had reported shortly after her 2018 op-ed featured in The Washington Post, for which the defamation suit is based, that they would be moving in a different direction with the Jerry Bruckheimer produced franchise.

“We want to bring in a new energy and vitality,” Disney’s film production chief Sean Bailey claimed at the time. “I love the [Pirates] movies, but part of the reason Paul [Wernick] and Rhett [Reese] are so interesting is that we want to give it a kick in the pants. And that’s what I’ve tasked them with,” he added of the writers that had been brought on for the franchise.

“I think Jack Sparrow will be his legacy,” scriptwriter Stuart Beattie had expressed. “It’s the only character he’s played five times, it’s the character he dresses up in to visit children in hospitals, it’s what he’ll be remembered for.”

Depp was reported to have spent around six hours in 2017 visiting with children at a hospital in Vancouver. For the duration of his stay, he remained in character entertaining and playing with the youths to comfort them through their trying time.

With millions reportedly tuning in to stay apprised of the latest developments in the trial, it would come as little surprise if Disney were to reconsider Depp’s role in upcoming iterations of the “Pirates of the Caribbean” films, even if it only meant a cameo role.

Depp’s suit against Heard is seeking $50 million in restitution for damages after claims of sexual abuse where leveled against him. Heard has countersued him for $100 million.
