Archbishop bans Nancy Pelosi from Holy Communion due to ‘grave evil she is perpetrating’

Following repeated and persistent attempts to sway House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), the archbishop of San Francisco determined Friday to ban her from a sacred rite for her “manifestly grave sin.”

Archbishop Salvatore Cordileone, 65, has decidedly had enough of professed Catholics within his flock actively denying accepted teachings and made good on his promise to take action. Since the leak of Justice Samuel Alito’s draft majority opinion on Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, Pelosi has intensified her vow to codify Roe v. Wade into law, and for that, Cordileone has ruled she will be banned from receiving Holy Communion.

“After numerous attempts to speak with Speaker Pelosi to help her understand the grave evil she is perpetrating,” the archbishop posted to Twitter, “the scandal she is causing, an (sic)  the danger to her own soul she is risking, I have determined that she is not to be admitted to Holy Communion.”

The post linked to a full letter from the archbishop wherein he details his reasoning writing, “A Catholic legislator who supports procured abortion, after knowing the teaching of the Church, commits a manifestly grave sin which is a cause of most serious scandal to others. Therefore, universal Church law provides that such person ‘are not to be admitted to Holy Communion.'”

In fact, the Catechism of the Catholic Church explicitly states: “Since the first century the Church has affirmed the moral evil of every procured abortion. This teaching has not changed and remains unchangeable. Direct abortion, that is to say, abortion willed either as an end or a means, is gravely contrary to the moral law: You shall not kill the embryo by abortion and shall not cause the newborn to perish.”

Cordileone made reference to his ongoing campaign to pray for the speaker and to help her commit to the faith which she often claims but does not fully embrace. He had asked that prayer and spiritual sacrifices be made for Pelosi.

“As you have not publicly repudiated your position on abortion,” he went on to write, “and continue to refer to your Catholic faith in justifying your position and to receive Holy Communion, that time has now come. Therefore, in light of my responsibility as the Archbishop of San Francisco to be ‘concerned for all the Christian faithful entrusted to [my] care’ … by means of this communication I am hereby notifying you that…you are not to be admitted to Holy Communion, until such time as you publicly repudiate your advocacy for the legitimacy of abortion and confess and receive absolution of this grave sin in the sacrament of Penance.”

“Please know,” the archbishop added, “that I find no pleasure whatsoever in fulfilling my pastoral duty here. Speaker Pelosi remains our sister in Christ. Her advocacy for the care of the poor and vulnerable elicits my admiration. I assure you that my action here is purely pastoral, not political.”
