Russian state TV hosts devour new White House press secretary in brutal takedown

Russian President Vladimir Putin’s propaganda trolls have evidently targeted White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre, taking a number of swipes at her during a rant where they asserted she got the position because she’s black and gay and that she would only last a month.

The Russian state TV hosts laughed at and mocked Jean-Pierre claiming that she will be “replaced” by a “white, heterosexual male,” that she was not chosen for her “professional abilities,” and that she got the job because she’s a “dark-skinned immigrant.”

The racist and sexist spectacle played out on state-owned Russian television channel Russia 1 and it accomplished its goal of ticking off American leftists and insulting the country in general.

Jean-Pierre is being touted by the White House as the first black, immigrant, openly gay White House press secretary in history. She was born in Fort-de-France, Martinique, and she is the daughter of Haitian parents. Her family moved to New York City when she was five years old.

The video came to light via the Daily Beast’s columnist, Julia Davis, who tweeted, “Kremlin propagandists on Russian state TV give a warm welcome to White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre. This revealing clip features racism, sexism and homophobia. It’s pretty typical for bigoted Russian television, but don’t watch it if you have high blood pressure.”

“I am obviously acutely aware that my presence at this podium represents a few firsts. I am a black, gay, immigrant woman, the first of all three of those to hold this position. I would not be here today if it were not for generations of barrier-breaking people before me. I stand on their shoulders,” Jean-Pierre remarked as she took over for Jen Psaki in her first press briefing on Monday.

Jean-Pierre is off to a rough start, constantly stumbling while answering reporters’ questions and repeatedly reading from prepared notes. All of that is playing into the Russians’ ridiculing of her at every available opportunity. They evidently see it as a sign of weakness from the United States.

Russian host Evgeny Popov knocked Jean-Pierre over her first press briefing, “This girl will make it for a month or two, then she’ll be replaced, to your satisfaction.”

“They’ll replace her with a white, heterosexual male,” he stated.

“Let’s live long enough to see it,” co-host Olga Skabeeva strangely replied, while laughing.

“She admits not being chosen for professional abilities, but because she is a dark-skinned immigrant and this was secured by her predecessors,” pundit Andrei Sidorchik smilingly remarked. “When she makes mistakes, that will be her excuse. ‘I’m not a professional, I was chosen for other reasons.”

“I read many books, graduated from a University, I did my Ph.D. thesis on such and such a topic, I speak many languages… but that’s not what it takes to represent the United States at the White House,” Popov snarked.

“It’s more important to be… like that,” he said pointing to Jean-Pierre in the clip. “But at least she’s cute.”

Jean-Pierre may struggle during press conferences, but she has been deeply mired in Democratic politics for years. She has worked on a number of presidential campaigns, earned a Master’s degree in public administration at Columbia University, and has worked as deputy White House press secretary for months, subbing for Psaki numerous times.
