‘Betrayed!’ Ex-top John McCain aide unloads on former boss, then picks off Lincoln Project phonies one by one

Republican political strategist Steve Schmidt went on an extended tear via social media, podcasts, and the media to shred everyone who has left the Lincoln Project, the late Senator John McCain, his daughter Meghan McCain, and former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin.

Schmidt was the architect of the late Sen. John McCain’s 2008 presidential campaign and he is now very publicly declaring that he regrets it and is disillusioned because of it. He specifically regrets helping Palin take center stage as McCain’s running mate. He evidently blames her for Trump rising to power.

The senator was allegedly Schmidt’s hero. But by the end of the campaign, he asserts that he didn’t think McCain should be in the White House.

“The only conceivable conclusion that you could get to after watching his conduct in this campaign was that he’s completely unfit to be president,” Schmidt told Politico in an interview. “Truth is, I didn’t vote for him either.”

Instead, Schmidt says he left the presidential line on his 2008 ballot blank.

“Senator McCain denied his long relationship with the lobbyist – to whom he was credibly accused of providing special favors – dozens of times to my face. After the New York Times story – which accurately detailed that relationship – was attacked and successfully discredited by the campaign under my direction, John McCain told me the truth backstage at an event in Ohio. Understandably, he was very concerned about this potentially campaign-ending issue. He kept saying, ‘The campaign is over.’ I reassured him that it was behind us,” Schmidt remarked on Substack concerning McCain’s alleged longtime relationship with a female lobbyist.

He would go on to repeatedly call McCain a liar and denigrate the man even though he has passed on. He also besmirched Sarah Palin over and over again in his diatribe and went after the Tea Party.

“I spoke out against Sarah Palin and called her selection a mistake because it was. I spoke out against the Tea Party movement because I knew where it could lead. John McCain asked me to stop, and I refused because I promised myself after the campaign that I would never tell a public lie again. Senator McCain tried to ride the Tea Party tiger in the 2010 election. He promised to build the wall. He said so many other things that he didn’t truly believe because they were politically expedient,” Schmidt wrote on Substack.

He had strong words for the McCain family in general, “I would be remiss if I did not directly address some commentary about what I owe the McCain family. I owe the McCain family nothing. I have never taken anything of value from a McCain. I helped Senator John McCain because I believed. I lost my faith in him a long time ago. I have never lost my faith in America and neither did he. We shared that in common.”

Schmidt seems to especially despise Meghan McCain.

“.@MeghanMcCain has been trying to have a conversation with me for almost 14 years,” Schmidt wrote Saturday on Twitter. “Once again, today, she called me a Pedophile. It is a slander. It is disgusting. It is untrue and it says everything about her. Here she is liking the tweet of a far right liar and piece of filth.”

“8/ anyone else who would listen in response, ‘Do you know who the F*** my Dad is’ It was the miserable anthem of the total chaos that was the McCain Campaign. It never stopped until one day when I said ENOUGH!” he tweeted in a lengthy rant against his hero’s daughter.

“9/ @MeghanMcCain is a bully, entitled, unaccomplished, spoiled and mean. She has rejected her Family’s history of service for a shallow and purposeless celebrity where she trades on a famous name like a fourth generation wannabe clipping coupons while pretending to be an heir,” he continued.

While he enthusiastically ripped the McCains, Schmidt saved a great deal of his ire for those who have left the disgraced Lincoln Project while at the same time defending the actions of the organization on Substack.

“After the McCain campaign, I did one more race, and then no politics for 10 years. I didn’t think anything could be crazier than the McCain campaign. I was wrong. This is the story of The Lincoln Project #MediaFail,” he started out tweeting and then went on to expose those who have departed the group.

“Where are they now. RON STESLOW. Today Ron STESLOW hosts the @PoliticologyPod. Between long pauses and affected concern, the Millenial who destroyed the LP for greed, fame and revenge talks about integrity and democracy. He stole the Podcast feed in his extortion,” Schmidt bitterly tweeted.

“Where are they now Jennifer Horn. After successfully shaking down the Weld Campaign @stuartpstevens Jennifer brought her skills to the LP where she demanded life time financial security in an Xmas Eve demand letter. She went on to smear and defame all of the people responsible,” he charged.

“Where are they now Mike Madrid. Mike Madrid continued to stew and grow the chip on his shoulder after the LP. After his successful extortions Mike went back to California where he implicated @AVillaraigosa in a scheme he concocted to smear @GavinNewsom and @JenSiebelNewsom,” Schmidt continued with his rant.

“Where are they now. Sarah Lenti. Sarah Lenti was the Lincoln Projects serial harasser. She was the person who was the cause of SETTLEMENTS around sexual and racial harassment,” he added.

  6. McCain should have been jailed over the Keating scandal.At the very least he should have been expelled.

    But the real blame lies with AZ voters. They sent the self serving slimebag back to DC over and over and over again.

  7. I used to be a loyal John McCain supporter until I saw just how sleazy he was in trying to back stab President Trump taking that fake Russian Dossier to the FBI. The final straw was when he, with his childish ego driven action started the fire on the U.S.S. Forrestal, on July 31, 1967. They were getting set to go on a fire mission where McCain’s Skyraider, was right in front of an F-4 Phantom fighter, maybe 4 to 5 feet. McCain initiated a “Hot Start”, where you start the fuel flow before you ignite the jet engine. Gallons of fuel build up and when you push ignition it makes a huge fiery blast, which is this case ignited a Suni air to air missile on the Phantoms wing. It exploded and hit John McCain’s fighter and exploded, starting a massive fire which killed 143 Navy Crewman. I was on a battle cruiser, the U.S. Boston CAG-1, and we were one mile off the coast on North Vietnam getting ready to shell a big railroad marshalling yard, 19 miles inland. We were caught in an ambush from two shore batteries on the two islands we shelled 2 weeks prior as well as two more on the mainland. We were in dire straits as we took hit after hit and could not get away, until on of our small destroyer escorts came in at full speed and laid a smoke screen to blind half of the shore batteries. I think that the mission that the U.S.S. Forrestal was launching was to help us escape. Right after we got loose and made for open sea we made for full speed to assist The Forrestal, 65 miles offshore. As soon as we got there we assisted with putting out the fires and carried on to help the wounded and then escorted Forrestal to Subic Bay for repairs. All because of the juvenile action of John S. McCain.
