The manhunt for an Alabama inmate and a corrections officer who helped him escape came to a tragic conclusion on Monday in Evansville, Indiana when a car chase ended in a crash, the fugitive was apprehended, and the guard allegedly shot herself in the head, later dying in a hospital.

Vicky White, 56, and Casey White, 38, were captured by authorities in Evansville following a high-speed car chase that ended in a rollover, according to Sheriff Rick Singleton who spoke with CNN News.

A tip led police to the motel where the two were hiding. The guard was spotted wearing a wig while leaving the motel according to US Marshal Matt Keely. Authorities believe the couple was at the motel beginning on May 3. She was the driver of the car.

Investigators released photos on Monday of a person they believed was Casey White, who was caught on a surveillance camera at a car wash. Vicky White was not seen in the images.

Following the crash, officers were able to extricate the inmate from the wrecked vehicle, but Vicky White was pinned inside with a gunshot wound to her head, Keely stated. Casey White reportedly told officers to help “his wife” who had shot herself in the head and then told them he didn’t do it.

Singleton is reportedly investigating if the gunshot wound was self-inflicted and told reporter Brian Entin he would not be surprised if it wasn’t.

No shots were fired during the chase, according to Singleton.

On Monday, prior to Vicky White dying, Singleton announced that she and Casey White would be brought back to Alabama for an arraignment.

“She has some answers to give us,” he commented. “What in the world provoked her, prompted her to pull a stunt like this, I don’t know. I don’t know if we’ll ever know.”

The guard helped the inmate escape Lauderdale County Detention Center on April 29 according to investigators before she fled the state with him. The two are not related but were evidently romantically involved.

Vicky White informed coworkers that she was taking Casey White to the courthouse for a mental evaluation. From there, they escaped. They reportedly drove to a shopping center parking lot, abandoned the officer’s patrol car, and then escaped in a vehicle Vicky White had parked the night before.

Casey White will be extradited back to Alabama. He was facing murder charges before he escaped and was serving a 75-year sentence for a number of other crimes.

Vicky White was the assistant director of corrections for Lauderdale County. She would have been charged with permitting or facilitating escape in the first degree, in addition to forgery and identity theft charges that were connected to her use of an alias in order to buy a 2007 Ford Edge the couple escaped in, according to officials.

The corrections officer was described by Sheriff Singleton as “an exemplary employee” with an “unblemished record” who had the trust and respect of her colleagues.

“Obviously there was a side to Vicky White that we weren’t aware of,” he told CNN.

“This escape was obviously well planned and calculated,” Singleton remarked. “A lot of preparation went into this. They had plenty of resources, had cash, had vehicles, had everything they needed to pull this off, and that’s what made this last week and a half so challenging. We were starting from ground zero, and not only that … they got a six-hour head start on us.”

Vicky White reportedly submitted her retirement papers, sold her home for well below market value, and bought the getaway car before she helped the inmate escape.

Casey White will reportedly return to the detention center for court hearings related to his murder charges. Singleton will make sure the inmate will be isolated in a cell.

“He will be in a cell by himself,” the sheriff told CNN. “He will stay in handcuffs and shackles while he’s in that cell and if he wants to sue me for violating his civil rights, so be it. He’s not getting out of this jail again. I’ll assure you that.”

  1. It’s amazing what one person can mentally do to another person. Even a creep like this guy just talked his way into the head of a woman who’s been a model police officer, years older than him and seems so different is so many ways, just days before being honored & retired…
