Pelosi proudly announces new minimum wage of $45,000 per year for House staffers

Congressional Democrats take care of their own with Speaker Nancy Pelosi proudly announcing that House staffers will be compensated at a minimum pay rate of $45,000 per year, a figure that will be a significant bump for many young staff members who work long hours.

On Friday, Madame Speaker sent out a “Dear Colleague” letter with the good news, “I am pleased to announce that, pursuant to the statutory authority of the Speaker in 2 U.S.C. 4532, the House will for the first time ever set the minimum annual pay for staff at $45,000.”

In the letter, Pelosi also wrote that the House was “strengthened by the many contributions of brilliant, dedicated and hard-working staff, who every day enable us to best serve the American people.”

“With a competitive minimum salary, the House will better be able to retain and recruit excellent, diverse talent. Doing so will open the doors to public service for those who may not have been able to afford to do so in the past,” she wrote. “This is also an issue of fairness, as many of the youngest staffers working the longest hours often earn the lowest salaries.”

Pelosi said that a 21 percent hike in members’ Representational Allowance “will more than cover this pay adjustment,” adding that “It is highly encouraged that Members use this MRA increase to honor the committed work of your staff members.” A deadline of September 1, 2022, has been set to implement the new pay structure.

Pelosi’s letter also stated that the maximum pay for House staffers will be raised to $203,700 to match the Senate.

The pay hike for House staffers comes at a time when regular Americans are being battered by record gas prices and the worst inflation rate in decades, made all the worse because of rising food costs, a factor that affects everyone, hitting families who are struggling the hardest and have yet to even have a handful of crumbs thrown to them by Pelosi and her fellow Democrats who are in complete control of the federal government.

Twitter users weighed in on the bump in pay for the underlings of the D.C. political elite with some finding it to be outrageous while others whined that it wasn’t enough to offset the high cost of living in the swamp.

Pelosi also announced that there will be a vote next week on a bill allowing House workers to unionize, “Congressional staffers deserve the same fundamental rights and protections as workers all across the country, including the ability to bargain collectively.”

“The average cost of renting a one-bedroom apartment in Washington is about $2,425 a month, according to And the average price of a studio is $1,942 a month, which over the course of a year, would still represent more than half the new minimum salary for House staffers,” according to the Associated Press.
