Man behind diagram in Musk’s ‘political shift’ tweet discusses break away from political Left

An evolutionary biologist who drew a now-famous cartoon shared by Elon Musk unpacked how the left is alienating its base of life-long Democrats in a discussion with Fox News host Tucker Carlson.

Last week, Musk—the newly-minted owner of Twitter—captured the mood of many people in the country by tweeting a cartoon graphic that illustrated liberalism’s relentless shift toward “woke,” left-wing insanity.

The cartoon was an instant hit, since it neatly illustrated what many former Democrats, and even those who may have considered themselves “progressives” once upon a time, think about what’s happening in the country.

Those who, not so long ago, considered themselves left of center now feel increasingly abandoned by liberals, who have sprinted recklessly toward the furthest and darkest fringes of Leftism in the years since the election of Barack Obama.

In other words, former liberals—those with generally progressive attitudes on civil rights and free speech protections, among other things—are now firmly in the “right-wing” camp, and largely through no fault of their own.

It’s a disorienting feeling that apparently resonates with many people.

On Monday night, the cartoon graphic’s author, Colin Wright, appeared on “Tucker Carlson Tonight” to talk about what caused him to create the illustration.

“Suddenly the same kind of nihilism you’re seeing in our foreign policy,” Carlson observed, “you’re seeing applied to our domestic policy, and even to questions of science. So, the people in charge of telling you that ‘biological sex isn’t real,’ and if you disagree you’re a racist. Now, for a lot of lifelong Democrats, this is bewildering, they didn’t sign up for this. Colin Wright’s been a Democrat all his life, didn’t sign up for this, so a year ago he came up with a cartoon to illustrate what he thought was going on.”

“He hasn’t changed, but the people who represent him in the Democratic Party have become very unreasonable. Elon Musk agrees—he just shared this cartoon on Twitter,” he added.

After introducing Wright, Carlson asked him why he drew the cartoon, and what it represented to him.

“I drew this cartoon in bed one night in my pajamas,” Wright explained, “because I had this increasing feeling of alienation from the political Left on a lot of core values that I felt were central to who I was as a voter. So, on issues such as free speech, for instance, that I think the Left held as being sacrosanct for much of its history…these values of free speech were generally held to be these core values in order to uphold free speech, to speak truth to power, and it’s been increasingly viewed as, sort of—”

“Well, it’s unacceptable,” Carlson interjected. “I mean, people are being called ‘racist’ for wanting free speech. I mean, you keep hearing that.”

Carlson then asked Wright if he ever imagined, when he was a card-carrying liberal, that the Left would begin accusing people of racism for desiring free and open discourse.

“Well no,” Wright answered, “it’s being increasingly viewed as hostile to the government…and then on the issues of women’s rights, for instance, we see—and I don’t think the Right has always been the best or most consistent on these issues—but at least the Right knows what a woman is: you know, an adult human female. And I say this as a biologist, so I say that with certainty. The Left, on the other hand, they can’t even tell you what a woman is, so they can’t even really pretend to understand or to protect women’s rights.

“So this is kind of my growing feeling of being disaffected from the Left on these many issues,” he added. “And I think a lot of Americans and people abroad feel the same way.”
