In a surprise perhaps, Trevor Noah brought some decent material to the White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner, which is otherwise known as the nerd prom, and which the comedian characterized as “the nation’s most distinguished super-spreader event.”
Amidst a lot of fake laughing from the audience, including President Joe Biden sitting a few feet away at the head table, the liberal host of the Daily Show on Comedy Central on Saturday evening mocked both Democrats and Republicans, including Biden, Sen. Kyrsten Sinema (D-Ariz.) and “hands-on” CNN legal analyst Jeffrey Toobin.
Describing himself as the “South African variant,” Noah quipped that Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WVa.) was the most powerful man in the room, described Donald Trump as the original Terminator while potential 2024 rival Ron DeSantis is the T-1000, and turned his attention to the incumbent president.
“You know, sir, can I just say, I think everyone will agree it’s actually nice to once again have a president who’s not afraid to come to the White House Correspondents’ Dinner and hear jokes about himself? I’ll be honest…If you didn’t come, I totally would’ve understood, because these people have been so hard on you, which I don’t get. I really don’t. Ever since you’ve come into office, things are really looking up. Gas is up. Rent is up. Food is up. Everything,” Noah said, as a grinning Biden (probably under instructions from his handlers) pretended he thought the remarks were really funny.

In a serious note, Noah admitted that there is a lot of passion on the Republican side, and that Biden, who has encountered “a tough first year” is probably worried about 2024.
“And as you all know,” he continued, “President Biden’s lack of a filter does get him into hot water sometimes. You know, last month he caused a huge international incident, saying that Vladimir Putin should be removed from power. It was very, very upsetting to Russia. Yeah, until someone explained to them that none of the stuff Biden wants actually gets done,” the comedian continued.
“But despite some hiccups, President Biden had led the country through some really dark times since he took office: the COVID pandemic, the war in Ukraine, the launch of CNN+. And don’t forget…he’s also had some major legislative successes, in his first year in office I may add…not to mention, no president in my memory has given more marginalized groups opportunities, and I’m talking about women, the LGBTQ community, the Taliban. The list goes on and on.”
Noah also joked that Biden gets his highest approval ratings when “a biracial African guy is standing next to him” which presumably is a reference to Barack Obama.
At the beginning of his presentation, Noah encouraged everyone to chill, but in a callback to Louis C.K., he added “not too comfortable Jeffery Toobin…Jeffrey, you made a mistake. You whipped it out in front of your coworkers. That’s the first step to winning a Grammy for Comedy Album of the Year. You’re halfway there, my friend…”
“You might have noticed, I’m going to be telling some jokes tonight. I might roast you gently…but I’m not here to tear anyone down. But I’m not doing this just for the attention. I’m a comedian. I’m not Kyrsten Sinema. And by the way, give it up for Kyrsten Sinema. Who ever thought we’d see the day in American politics when a senator could be openly bisexual, but closeted Republican….That’s progress.”
