Former CBS reporter’s move to Planned Parenthood predictable after gushing interview with leader

A CBS reporter, Kate Smith, has announced that she’s leaving the network to join Planned Parenthood.

The change has led some to ask what exactly has changed, given Smith’s constant and glowing coverage of the nation’s largest abortion provider. Smith has covered abortions from the most positive position possible since 2018.

Among the items Smith covered was extremely friendly coverage of a 77-year-old abortion clinic volunteer, and steadfastly chronicled (and championed) a story about a woman in her second trimester who couldn’t find someone to give her an abortion in Texas during the Covid-19 pandemic.

By far the most prominent work Smith did (and may have had a significant impact on her application to Planned Parenthood) was her gushing interviews of Alexis McGill Johnson, president of Planned Parenthood, in which her first line was to congratulate Johnson:

Strangely enough, it was when Smith quit CBS News in July of 2021 that she stated that she was now free to be open about her views on “reproductive rights,” despite having spent her entire time at CBS News being as vocally pro-abortion as possible. It’s hard to imagine what she could have actually changed in order to be more of a cheerleader for Planned Parenthood.

“Now that I’m not a reporter I can be candid about my own opinions on reproductive rights,” Smith said at the time, according to MRC Newsbusters.

“I’ll say this: With or without Roe v Wade access to abortion is disappearing across the South and Midwest for low-income women. And it’s happening more or less under the radar. It’s a pivotal moment for abortion rights, and one that deserves a lot of coverage and our attention. Editors, I know there’s reader and viewer fatigue when it seems like the millionth six-week ban. But it’s still major news and ought to be covered,” Smith continued.

“Everyone knows you’re pro-abortion. It’s not a secret,” Ryan Bomberger, a pro-life activist, said in response.

In light of these statements, her transition to Planned Parenthood seems less of a career change than a lateral transfer within the same organization. Given how friendly her coverage of Planned Parenthood and the abortion industry were, there are questions as to whether she actually did anything besides promoting Planned Parenthood and its talking points as a reporter for CBS News.

Conservative commentator Erick Erickson was one such voice who had noted that it seemed like she was already employed by Planned Parenthood:

“I remember getting notes from several reporters upset with me saying Kate Smith has been nothing but a propagandist for the abortion industry at CBS and now this.”

At her new home at Planned Parenthood, Smith will finally be able to go all-in for abortion, totally unfettered. Though given her tenure at CBS News, it may be hard to spot the difference.
