Depending upon who you ask, Elon Musk’s $44 billion-dollar acquisition of Twitter is either a victory for free speech, a boon for conservatives, or the end of the world as we know it.
What remains to fill the space on the other side of the equals sign is two-fold: Whether or not former President Trump will return to Twitter – as he will certainly be allowed – and whether or not he actually will.
Trump’s attempt to compete with platforms such as Twitter and Facebook has gotten off to an objectively inauspicious start.
The February 2022 launch of TRUTH Social by the Trump Media and Technology Group (TMTG) faced problems in that it was only available for iPhone users and failed to garner a sufficient customer base, even in Beta testing. The future of the endeavor is now in question as Twitter will soon be a privately held company that had permanently banned the 45th president in January of 2021.
“I am not going on Twitter, I am going to stay on TRUTH,” Trump told Fox News Monday. “I hope Elon buys Twitter because he’ll make improvements to it and he is a good man, but I am going to be staying on TRUTH.”.
He intimated as much shortly before Musk bought the social media leviathan.

The panel of Fox News’ “The Five” debated the topic Monday.
“I’m a big Elon Musk fan, and I assume because he’s a genius that this is a good deal for him,” said part-time conservative Geraldo Rivera, adding that he thinks Trump’s comments about staying on his own struggling platform are simply a matter of pride.
In response to that, Jeanine Pirro asked the group, “But why do you think he [Trump] said it?”
“Because he owns Truth Social,” replied Rivera, who predicted Trump will certainly vacillate. “Knowing him for so many years, I’ll think he’ll change his mind in 10 minutes.”
“He will,” Pirro agreed.
“I think this is bad news for Truth Social because he’s not gonna be able to help himself,” declared co-host Greg Gutfeld.
“He’s gonna hop back on,” he foretold. “Think about having so much money that you can just get mildly irritated over something and then buy the thing that irritated you.”
“That’s my dream,” co-host Dana Perino replied.
Curiously, Trump remains defiant.
“We’re taking in millions of people, and what we’re finding is that the response on TRUTH is much better than being on Twitter,” Trump told Fox News. “Twitter has bots and fake accounts, and we are doing everything we can.”
He added firmly, “The bottom line is, no, I am not going back to Twitter.”
But that was Monday, and much has changed since then.
