NYC Mayor Adams hits Dems for backing BLM, says party must give police ‘tools to deal with violence’

Crime rates have remained on the rise across the nation and after running on a crime-fighting platform, New York City Mayor Eric Adams’s failure to produce genuine results in providing safety to his citizens has led him to pass the blame to his fellow Democrats for putting Black Lives Matter activism ahead of policing.

Adams sat down with Anderson Cooper for a taping of CBS’ “60 Minutes” where the central focus of their discussion remained on crime in New York. Throughout the conversation, hizzoner made every effort to portray himself as a moderate or, at the very least, open to compromise on finding solutions.

However, his idea of compromise appeared to center around taking responsibility for accomplishments and shifting the blame to others for failures as he argued that anti-police BLM supporters should be happy with what he has done.

“Democrats don’t like talking about intervention,” Adams said. “But we have to lean into the discomfort of the immediate things we must do. Because you can’t say Black Lives Matter when a police officer shoots a young person, but does that black lives matter when a 12-year-old baby was shot?”

Cooper asked Adams why Democrats don’t like to talk about it and the mayor responded, “Because when you talk about intervention, you have to use the term of giving police officers the tools to deal with violence right now.”

Adams renewed the previously disbanded anti-crime unit, now dubbed the anti-gun unit, in March under the official title Neighborhood Safety Teams. The kind of proactive steps that the anti-crime unit took before they were shut down in 2020 amid the “Defund the Police” movement were the kind of measures that former Mayor Rudy Giuliani had taken to drive down the crime in New York City.

Cooper compared Adams’s policies to that of Giuliani and the current mayor attempted to rewrite history and discredit the measurable differences in their administrations.

“They have allowed Rudy Giuliani to hijack something that the overwhelming number of people of color want. They will tell you, ‘We want our police. We don’t want our police to be abusive.’ And that is the balance that I know we can do in this – in this city,” he said.

No matter the number of times that Adams reiterated his own tenure as a police officer, he could not escape the reality that his policies are mainly PR stunts that have accomplished little. The New York Post reported Sunday that of 25 gun arrests made since the launch of the Neighborhood Safety Teams, they have been able to obtain the records of 12 cases. Out of those 12, 11 defendants had been released having posted bail or been sent home with no bail required.

“He is a black man – he’s a white man in blackface,” Hawk Newsome, the co-founder of Black Lives Matter of Greater New York recently said of Adams, “and a very conservative-minded white man, at that. So what we have is a man with hundreds of people on the city’s payroll, billions of dollars in budget, and 40,000 police officers. He has 10 victims in one night. The night before he had 16 shooting victims on the train and they say what are you going to do about policing and he says what about BLM? Is America not smart enough to see him deflecting?”

Meanwhile, as Adams attempts to have it both ways accomplishing little and displeasing all parties, overall crime in NYC continues to rise, up 44 percent over this time last year, according to the Daily Mail.
