Jewish student at NYU informs classmates on left of their ‘big, fat Jew-hatred problem’

A Jewish student at New York University (NYU) expertly used the alleged hateful actions and rhetoric of his peers to slam them for anti-Semitism while thanking them for bringing attention to the left’s “big, fat Jew-hatred problem.”

Tal Fortgang, a third-year law student at NYU and senior research associate with the American Enterprise Institute, penned an open letter to his classmates titled, “To the Antisemites Who Sit Next to Me at School,” wherein he addressed numerous examples of ridiculing of Jewish students and calls for violence against Israel.

Posted to Bari Weiss’s “Common Sense” substack, Fortgang wrote, “All of you have done more than I ever could to convince my fellow Jews that the left doesn’t just have a Corbyn problem or a Tlaib problem or a Farrakhan problem. It has a big, fat Jew-hatred problem right in its ideological core.”

In one example, he linked to a tweet from fellow student and self-proclaimed anti-zionist Yosi Badie who shared a quote that read “my love language is marg bar israel”

Fortgang provided a translation to “marg bar” as “death to” and thanked Badie for her contribution to his point about the “Jew-hatred problem” from the left. Recently, Badie appeared proud to share a post that explained she and her fellow members of the NYU Law Students for Justice in Palestine (LSJP) Board might be facing punishment from the university for defending terrorists and claiming Zionists had a “grip on the media.”

“To the dozen NYU student groups that signed on to [LSJP’s] statement defending terrorist attacks on Israeli civilians because ‘People living under occupation have a right to resist their violent occupation,’ and bemoaned the ‘Zionist grip on the media’: thank you” the law student wrote.

That same organization, Fortgang went on citing their own statement, “explained: ‘Zionism is, by design, an ideology that promotes violence against, and hatred and delegitimization of Palestinians. Embedded in the Zionist supremacy narrative is the orientalist, Islamophobic idea that Azkenazi [sic] Jewish whiteness is fundamentally superior to Palestinian lives, culture, and identity,'” and for that, he thanked them.

He went on to quote classmates who said things like, “Zionism is a racist imperialist, white supremacist ideology, not a religious movement,” and accused another of mocking a Jewish peer who called for condemnation of the shootings of unarmed men, women, and children by stating, “you don’t condemn an earthquake or a lethal outbreak of flu.”

Attention to these clashes in American classrooms come as tensions grow abroad while President Joe Biden seeks a return to the Iran nuclear deal. Iran has accused Israel of “Zionist” aggression after Palestinians and Israelis clashed at the Al-Aqsa mosque in Jerusalem. Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) described the conflict that left more than 150 Palestinians injured as “desecration of the holy values of Muslims.”

However, the IRGC neglected to mention the ongoing nature of the conflict that had led to the desecration of Joseph’s Tomb in Israel’s West Bank earlier in the month. Fortgang welcomed a dialogue on this subject.

He concluded, “Thank you for starting one of those ‘courageous conversation’ we’re always supposed to have. This one not about gender or systemic racism or climate change, but about the burning debate over whether it is fantastic or merely acceptable that innocent Jews are being murdered in Israel.”
