‘That’s the joke’: Gun instructor’s irreverent, non-PC lessons for black and white people NOT well received

At the annual Las Vegas CCW event, held last week at the Clark County Library, Nephi “Khaliki” Oliva put on a lively gun safety demonstration that has everybody talking for all the wrong reasons.

Oliva, the founder and CEO of Vegas CCW—who also styles himself a comedian—presented slides aimed at special gun safety rules, including “Firearm Safety for Black People,” and “Firearm Safety for White People.” Predictably, given today’s climate of racial hypersensitivity, the slides went over like a lead balloon.

The slide targeted to black people depicted a racy caricature of a black man, with saggy pants, a red bandana over his face, and holding a gun sideways. Oliva then read off a few humorous bullet points: “ALWAYS shoot the gun right side up;” “ALWAYS lick the chicken grease off your fingers;” “ALWAYS make sure there’s a white person around so you have someone to blame for everything that goes wrong in your life;” “ALWAYS aim for small children to ensure you actually hit another gang member.”

He then presented a slide with a caricature of a pot-bellied white redneck, with a bushy beard and a trucker hat. “ALWAYS put your beer down before handling a firearm,” Oliva read, “ALWAYS keep your finger out of your nose while shooting;” “ALWAYS wear a wife beater on the range;” “ALWAYS make sure there are no minorities in your backdrop.”

That last one elicited quite a few groans from the audience.

Although many of the attendees laughed at the risqué jokes, quite a few people took immediate offense and denounced the slides, questioning their relevance to a class for concealed carry permits. But Oliva, who has been the lead instructor at Vegas CCW for over four years, told local news station KSNV that his intention was “to take a very mundane subject that gets forgotten very easily but is very important and making it memorable by shocking their system. Always keep the weapon pointed in a safe direction, that’s the joke.”

Naturally enough, many on social media didn’t get the joke. Twitter erupted with many accusing Oliva—who is himself of Afghan descent—of being a racist, a white supremacist, and just generally a horrible person. Conveniently, those who denounced Oliva cherry-picked from his presentation, focusing entirely on the “Firearm Safety for Black People” slide, while omitting any mention of the one on white people.

Later in the class (in another clip that just happened to be overlooked by his critics,) Oliva mentioned his thoughts about racism.

“I think racism is funny,” he explained to the audience. “In order to be a racist you’ve got to be so ignorant. To me, racism is about fear. I fear you so I want to try to control you because I’m afraid that if you are left to your own devices you will rise above me. When somebody talks about the racist s***, I think they’ve revealed themselves in a way that is quite humorous to me.”

Unfortunately for Oliva, his comments come at a moment in American history when taking offense has been perfected as an art form. Even the library where the event was hosted felt the need to weigh in.

“Library District condemns hate speech in any form and will be meeting to review our room rental policy,” a library spokesperson told KSNV. “The group in question rented a meeting room from the Library District and it is in no way connected to our organization, beliefs, or views.”

  1. Possibly the most true and least funny statement in that story is that those “comments come at a moment in American history when taking offense has been perfected as an art form”.

  2. The idiots who post on Tweet and fakebook must have no life, and too much time on their hands. Why would they think themselves SO special that anyone cares what they say? They are not, which is why I pay both no attention

  3. Oliva was right–racism is ignorance. Also ignorant is calling everyone who doesnt agree with your leftist agenda a “racist”. Glad his classes are well attended….it is not like Biden is backing the police.

  4. Some of us have become so jaded we can’t laugh at the little idiosyncrasies we all have in our own Ives.

  5. I find it hilarious. Too many people get offended way too easily these days…. lighten up its just a joke

  6. He didn’t get slapped on his way out? I know black shooters in Philly who would have slapped him. I did match shooting with them. We once went to a match 50 or so miles out and on the way back the other people in the car were commenting about the strange looks we got at the match, I to tell them that out of the six people we had at the match I was the only white guy.

  7. I see it over and over on tv. the black perp holds a pistol sideways. How can they hit anything that isn’t close range? the trajectory of the bullet is normally up to be pulled down by gravity at the distance is has been zero’d in at. Held sideways from the right hand the trajectory would be left and down from gravity. a miss for sure.

    1. “How can they hit anything” They can’t. That is why there are so many wounded because of misses in Chitown.

    1. Right! God forbid a little humor in today’s world! If some of these folks laugh they would probably break their face…

  8. Lotta people out there looking for an excuse to be offended. We’ve become a nation of cup cakes.

  9. Obama was the first with the thin skin. Don Rickles, Rodney Dangerfield, and Phyllis Diller would all roll over in their graves, let alone comic greats like Eddie Murphy, Redd Foxx, and so many others who had zero problems telling jokes about themselves and others, irregardless of skin color. If a person is a comic putting on a show, if you don’t like his jokes leave! Ortherwise, enjoy the show and knock off the nonsense.

  10. No one – not the left or the right – honestly gives two sh*ts about knee-grows.

  11. If he used only the “white” slides this would be a non-issue. Any complaint filed would have been ignored by the library and the media.

  12. Tell that librarian to STFU&SITDOWN,,,,,if it were so bad how many left the presentation and why didn’t the library close it down,,,,because it wasn’t and everyone enjoyed it ,except for a few who could of gotten up and left, but didn’t,,,,, just have to have drama,,,,,,FJB,,,,,,,
