In what quipsters (of course) have described as a sticky situation that maybe wasn’t, an animal rights activist attempted some performance art that some might say was for the birds during one of Tuesday evening’s National Basketball Association play-in games.

Or as the New York Post described it, “An animal rights protester ensured she was glued to the action during the Clippers-Timberwolves play-in game — literally.”

It turned out that the protest didn’t stick, as it were.

Near the end of the second quarter of the matchup between the Los Angeles Clippers and the Minnesota Timberwolves at the Target Center in Minneapolis, a woman stormed the court and glued herself, or tried to, to the floor underneath one of the baskets apparently in a protest against the home team’s owner.

Security ushered her off the court after about a two-minute delay in the game during which a quick cleanup occurred on the hardwood floor. The glue apparently did not fully adhere to the surface.

A broadcaster doing the game for TNT initially thought that an arena worker had fallen under the hoop before a sideline reporter provided additional information.

Watch/listen:

The woman was reportedly affiliated with a group called Direct Action Everywhere, which took to Twitter to explain what happened.

“DxE investigator Alicia Santurio is the protestor who disrupted the Timberwolves game, supergluing herself to the court after today’s investigation exposed team owner Glen Taylor’s factory farm brutally killing 5 million birds via ‘ventilation shutdown.'”

Santurio was wearing a shirt containing the message “Glen Taylor roasts animals alive.”

The incident reportedly prompted the hashtag #GlueGirl to trend on Twitter. The player standing near her in some of the pics appears to be T-Wolves point guard Patrick Beverley.

According to a press release from the group, NBA franchise boss Taylor, a billionaire, also owns an Iowa egg farm known as Rembrandt Enterprises where the mass killing of the chickens allegedly occurred after an avian influenza outbreak.

Ventilation shutdown plus is an inhumane process, the organization claimed, by which “ventilation openings in the industrial sheds full of birds are closed, and some combination of heat, steam and/or carbon dioxide gas are introduced, eventually killing the animals via suffocation.”

“A Direct Action Network spokesman told the Washington Examiner that Santurio received a trespass warning from Minneapolis police after the incident and her hand sustained some torn and stitched skin as she was pulled up from the court,” the news outlet detailed.

The NBA play-in games are the gateway to the playoffs for the also-rans. The Wolves defeated the Clips by a score of 109-104 to advance into the first official round of the tournament where they will match up with the Memphis Grizzlies.

“The Iowa Department of Agriculture confirmed that 5.3 million birds were destroyed in Buena Vista County, Iowa — where Rembrandt Enterprises is located — in an attempt to quell an outbreak of the bird flu, which has seen multiple outbreaks since the start of March,” USA Today reported.

  2. I know just where the Rembrandt egg place is. I have delivered equipment there. Now I know who owns the place. This nut job would call me an accessory to murder for simply delivering there.
