A rock band from Venezuela, The Zeta, had much of their gear, papers, and money stolen from them while at a coffee shop in California, and fans have given generously to their fundraiser to help them recoup their losses.

The band, which had gone on a 45-day tour in the United States, stopped in Oakland, California to grab coffee on the corner of Webster and 14th street, at roughly 12 PM, and had left their van in the parking lot. The total trip to grab the coffee was not more than 5-10 minutes, according to band members in comments taken by Fox 2 KTVU.

In that time, however, someone managed to steal much of the band’s belongings, such as computers, expensive digital music equipment, cash from their tour totaling approximately $1,000, as well as their passports, green cards, Social Security cards, and other critical legal documents. Various original works of art, videos, and artistic works in progress that cannot be replaced were also stolen.

Much of the band’s actual instruments, however, were left in the van, possibly too bulky to efficiently loot in the time the thieves had to work with.

“The very first moment, it’s 100 percent shocking and you get so scared, because you have so much important stuff inside. It actually was such a little window of time, that we left the van to go and grab coffee,” said band member Dani Hernandez.

“During the whole time that we stay in San Francisco, we know it’s not the best place to leave your van, so we were very careful the whole time that we were there. Overnight we had some of the guys sleeping in the van,” Hernandez continued, commenting on San Francisco’s new reputation for crime.

The band did initially attempt to use the tracking ability in their Apple AirPods to locate the thieves, but then had second thoughts and decided not to give chase when they considered that the thieves may be armed.

The manager of the band, Marshal Rones, has organized a GoFundMe for fans to help donate to cover the damages in lost goods. The band believed their losses to be approximately $12,000, however, they have managed to raise over $13,000 from donations since Thursday.

“We are all so beyond grateful and appreciative of you all. From the bottom of our hearts, thank you,” said Rones on the GoFundMe page.

The biggest issue facing the band now is how to deal with their stolen passports. The lack of diplomatic relations with Venezuala makes the prospect of securing replacements considerably more difficult. “You know, to get your Venezuelan passport is such a task, it’s so hard,” Hernandez commented.

At time of writing, there are no suspects in custody. Oakland Police say they are looking into the theft, but at time of writing they have only one witness to the crime, who told them that they saw several people break into the van before escaping in a red SUV.
