Fox News host Tucker Carlson recognized genuine journalism during his Friday broadcast in what he called “one of the greatest stories ever,” inviting University of Chicago freshman Christopher Phillips on his program to talk about an interaction with CNN’s Brian Stelter that left the young man expressing, “There was no remorse whatsoever.”
Before bringing his guest in, the host of “Tucker Carlson Tonight” recounted the details of the “Disinformation and the Erosion of Democracy” conference that had been hosted by The Atlantic magazine. As reported, Phillips’s questions for Stelter went viral as much for their no-holds-barred slam against the Democratic talking points that CNN peddles as they did for the inept and cagey deflection that Stelter had offered up in response.
Phillips laid out the laundry list of disinformation from Stelter specifically, noting the Russian collusion hoax, the Jussie Smollett hoax, the slander of Justice Brett Kavanaugh and Nick Sandmann, and the complete dismissal of Hunter Biden’s laptop as of credible concern.
After the clip had played, Carlson welcomed the writer from the Chicago Thinker on his program and asked, “What possessed you to confront these purveyors of disinformation?”
“The way I’ve always been is to search for truth and ask questions to sift through the lies and find out what’s really going on,” Phillips explained simply of himself and his colleagues Evita Duffy and Daniel Schmidt who also asked hard-hitting questions at the event.
The young journalist added, “We see right when we come in, a ton of people, a ton of legacy media employees whose entire careers have been spreading disinformation. Those are the people who are telling us about how to avoid disinformation.”
After hearing Stelter talk for “30 minutes about how Fox News is this huge purveyor of disinformation. They’re the enemy of the people,” Phillips was glad to have his chance to call the CNN host out for it.
“And then I come up and I say, Wait a second. Run that back. Because actually CNN – from what I’ve seen, at least – is probably 10 times the purveyor of disinformation that you claim Fox News to be,” he stated.
“All the mistakes of the mainstream media, and CNN in particular, seem to magically all go in one direction, are we expected to believe that this is all just some sort of random coincidence or is there something else behind it?” the journalist asked of Stelter at the conference.
“And you know, he didn’t really have a great answer for it,” he told Carlson.
In fact, Stelter’s immediate response was, “Too bad, time for lunch,” before offering a brush off of the question.
When Carlson asked about some of the objective facts that Phillips had pointed out, the young journalist replied, “Gosh, I mean you know, to tell you the truth I didn’t exactly expect him to hand over the keys and say, ‘You know what, we’re corrupt, go ahead, Chris, and make CNN the truth.'”
Phillips had genuinely expected an admission of fault from Stelter, “But there was no apology. There was no remorse whatsoever. It’s just, you know, I don’t know what news network you’re talking about. That’s not mine when in reality, he said these things on CNN. It’s all documented.”
Though he received the typical leftist pushback on campus, Phillips explained he also received a good deal of support for his “pure journalism.”
Carlson noted these kinds of interactions are crucial and Stelter would be wise to, “Just touch reality once a day, you know, reassure us that you’re not like demented.”
