South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem gave a speech on Wednesday night to the Reagan Library, with a message for Republicans about how to behave.
Speaking to Fox News Digital before the speech itself, Noem noted that the theme would be to listen more, talk less, and cease the petty bickering. The central portion of her message was one sentence Noem delivered in remarks prepared before the speech in an interview with Fox News:
“My advice to the Republican Party is to get over yourself.”
“We all have people in our lives we have stopped talking to, we have been offended by, or believe they are too far at the other end of the political spectrum from us that there is no sense in wasting words on them. We need to get over ourselves. And start by listening,” Noem continued.
As part of her interview prior to the speech itself, Noem told Fox News that South Dakota is a success story that is proof positive that Republican policies, especially of the sort articulated by former President Ronald Reagan, whom Noem greatly admires, are working.
“South Dakota is proof that our Republican principles work. We in South Dakota have very low taxes, very low regulations. We kept our state open during the pandemic. We defend our freedoms and rights and we have the number one economy in the country,” she said.
Noem also felt that Republicans are getting distracted, and show a lack of “discipline” when getting into pointless arguments on Twitter that serve no real goal and don’t convince anybody to change their votes.
“We’ve quit having conversations with people we disagree with. Instead, if we disagree with people, we blow them up or jump on Twitter. That needs to stop. We need to listen and build relationships. Communication is one of the things we have to discipline ourselves on,” Noem told Fox News.
“I’m encouraging Republicans to … listen, have a conversation rather than constantly blowing each other up and storming out of the room,” Noem continued.
The governor went on to say that she felt Reagan and former President Donald Trump were very similar, with the exception of immigration, probably referring to Reagan’s amnesty of 3 million illegal immigrants, which could not be more opposite to Trump’s approach. Noem openly agreed with the statement that her message and approach about Republicans getting over themselves was more homage to Reagan’s communication style than Trump’s.
Noem, the first woman to govern South Dakota, has been both heroine and villain, depending on who you ask. The governor was notable for refusing to shut down South Dakota for the Covid-19 pandemic, and refusing to impose a public mask mandate or restrictions on large gatherings. In 2020, at the height of the pandemic, Noem celebrated the Fourth of July with Trump at Mount Rushmore.
As for future political aspirations, Noem refused to elaborate beyond swaying she was focusing on her 2022 re-election campaign as governor of South Dakota.
