In the wake of allegations of yet more horrific Russian atrocities, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zeleneskyy had strong words, directly addressing Russian mothers.
After touring the carnage at Bucha, Zelenskyy spoke to the Kyiv Independent, and said Russian mothers should look at the evidence of large-scale war crimes being committed against Ukraine, and accused them of raising “murderers, looters, and butchers.”

“Mothers of Russian soldiers should see that. See what bastards you’ve raised. Murderers, looters, butchers.”

Zelenskyy went on to directly address Russian mothers in a video that has been posted to social media and made the rounds:
Powerful, passionate address from Zelensky tonight. Switching from Ukrainian to Russian he addresses mothers of soldiers who committed horrific war crimes in Bucha, Irpin, Hostomel, asking how they raised “butchers,” and he tells Moscow to see how it’s orders are being fulfilled. pic.twitter.com/7UyYxqiY4V

It isn’t the first time Zelenskyy has directly addressed Russian mothers. On March 11th, he asked them to reconsider sending their sons to fight and die in Ukraine, saying: “Do not send your children to war in a foreign land. Do not give your son to death or captivity.” He urged them not to believe Russia’s government when it claimed they were only sent on exercises or a limited “special military operation” to “liberate” Ukrainians. This time, however, he wasn’t making a plea so much as offering a strong condemnation.
The death toll for Russian soldiers has been claimed to be as high as 15,000 by Ukraine, is conservatively estimated at around 10,000 by western intelligence officials, and claimed by the Russians to somehow be less than 1,000.
As the shocking images from Bucha and other areas recently liberated from retreating Russian forces have made their way around the world, there has been widespread condemnation. Photos of mass graves, civilians tied with their hands behind their backs and shot in the back of the head, and in Gostomel even a woman branded with a swastika and shot have caused ripples across the globe.

Zelenskyy has been very active on the information front and has been taking the time to provide a regular stream of photos and videos through his official channels on social media services such as Telegram (very popular in Ukraine) and Twitter. The Ukrainian president even recorded a video address that was played at the Grammys:

President Volodymyr Zelensky addressed the audience in a pre-recorded video, wherein he said:“We are fighting Russia, which brings horrible silence with its bombs. The dead silence. Fill the silence with your music.” pic.twitter.com/DrUzTNqsDO

By contrast, Russian propaganda efforts, usually aided by a network of “troll farms” and bot accounts, seem to have badly stumbled, and Russia has made statements that seem like ludicrous parodies of themselves, such as claiming they were waging war in Ukraine to prevent war from breaking out in Ukraine, prompting widespread ridicule.
As Russia’s war of conquest against Ukraine rages on other fronts, such as in Donbas to the east and Odesa to the south, the condemnation and tough rhetoric are sure to escalate just as the violence does.
