More than a year and a half after the Black Lives Matter riots in Portland, Oregon, an Indianapolis man has been sentenced to 10 years in prison after he pleaded guilty to 14 felony charges that included attempted murder.
On Tuesday, Multnomah County District Attorney Mike Schmidt released a statement regarding the grand jury sentencing of 25-year-old Malik Muhammed. That statement explained the actions taken by Muhammed on four separate dates in question that led to the numerous felony charges.
“In the late summer of 2020, Muhammed traveled to Portland, Oregon with the intent to violently engage in area protests,” Schmidt’s statement read. “His criminal activity spanned September and October of 2020 and included four separate criminal incidents.”
“On September 5, 2020, Muhammed constructed multiple Molotov cocktails. He then brought those explosive devices, along with baseball bats, to a planned protest event that evening at the East Portland Police Precinct Building,” he went on.

“During the event, Muhammed handed out the bats and threw multiple explosive devices in the direction of police officers. One of those devices landed short and caused a fiery explosion which engulfed a fellow protester in flames,” Schmidt explained, “causing sever injuries to that person’s legs.”
For that date, Muhammed was charged with Assault in the Second Degree, Unlawful Manufacture and Unlawful Possession of a Destructive Device and Riot. On September 21 and 23 he received charges of Attempted Murder 2 and Riot for throwing Molotov cocktails at police.
The explosive device from the September 21 protest at the Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office Penumbra Kelly Building failed to detonate and was used as evidence to aid in the investigation to identify Muhammed. The September 23 protest occurred at the Multnomah Country Justice Center and Portland Police Central Precinct.
Schmidt explained that “During the event, a separate protester set the building on fire (See State v. Cyan Bass) and police moved into the area to extinguish the fire. When police advanced, Muhammed threw a Molotov cocktail at the police officers…narrowly missed multiple officers and caught the clothing of one of the officers on fire.”

Lastly, Muhammed was charged with four counts of Criminal Mischief in the First Degree, Unlawful Possession of a Firearm and his fourth Riot charge for his actions at an October 11 protest near Directors Park in downtown Portland.
“During this event, Muhammed used a baton to smash the windows of the Oregon Historical Society, Portland State University, and multiple other businesses in the downtown Portland area,” the statement explained. Muhammed attempted to hide a loaded firearm during the arrest.
The convicted felon is now expected to pay $200,000 in restitution in addition to his decade long sentence. According to The Oregonian, Muhammed had been indicted on 28 charges in June 2021 and the Portland Freedom Fund had posted $212,500 of his $2.1 million bail. However, he was arrested two days later on federal charges and he remained in jail until his sentencing Tuesday.

Journalist Andy Ngo relayed how Muhammed continued to be funded throughout his term in jail and indicated how this directly supported “his plans to kill people.” As the Oregonian reported, social media posts by Muhammed included captions like, “Kill cops. Shoot back. We say no justice no peace we mean NO PEACE.”
