Many pregnant women try to plan out the perfect birthing scenario to ensure both baby and mom are comfortable throughout the delivery process. Still, one Oregon woman found herself in a unique delivery venue for her baby on Wednesday.

The woman – who was reportedly in the midst of a mental health crisis – popped her baby out right smack in the middle of a Portland sidewalk before getting up, walking away and leaving the child behind, KOIN reported.

The Portland Police Bureau said the delivery happened just before 11 a.m. when they received a report that the woman had delivered her baby on the sidewalk close to S.W. 13th and Market St.

“It’s a cold day, it wasn’t raining at that moment, but it was raining earlier and the sidewalk at Southwest 13th and Market is no place to deliver a baby alone,” said Police Officer Kirby-Glatkowski, who was on patrol looking for a serial burglar at the time of the call.

Once the officers arrived at the sidewalk maternity zone, they checked on the baby’s health and were told the newborn seemed well.

“They said the mother, the woman, was stumbling away eastbound on Market with a lot of blood and amniotic fluid all over her,” Kirby-Glatkowski said.

“Officers then caught up with the mother nearby,” the Portland Police Bureau said. “She was evaluated and placed on a police officer hold to get a mental health evaluation. She and her baby, a girl, were transported to the hospital by ambulance.”

As part of the Enhanced Crisis Intervention Team, Officer Kirby-Glatkowski had special training to handle people like the new mother who seemed to be in mental crisis.

“My partner and I went to try and engage her, contact her, talk to her see what was going on. We were able, with some additional resources on scene, get her stopped at about 12th and Market and get her into an ambulance and into a hospital for physical assessment and also address other issues,” Kirby-Glatkowski explained.

The Portland Police Bureau bike squad in the area at the time posted on Instagram to thank the community members who assisted the mother and infant child and dialed 911.

This was reportedly not the first time the woman had interactions with the Portland Police Bureau’s Behavioral Health Unit. Officials are still looking for answers to what led up to the sidewalk situation.

“I can’t believe, frankly, that that happened and I’m glad we have safe of a resolution as possible today,” said Kirby-Glatkowski.

Reactions on social media spoke to the heartbreaking situation, with many hoping for a good outcome for the new baby.
