With the world on edge following Russian President Vladimir Putin placing his nuclear forces on heightened alert, a British man’s diabolical prank on his unsuspecting family has gone viral on social media with many in disbelief that he would spring such a cruel joke on his loved ones.

Wayne Coldicutt, a 32-year-old who hails from the Kirkdale district of Liverpool put together a video of a faux BBC emergency broadcast which he teed up on the telly shortly before calling out to his fiancé, 31-year-old Becca Redhead to quickly come into the living room for the earth-shattering news of the looming atomic disaster.

Redhead, who had been bathing her 3-year-old son arrived just in time for the ominous warning with the young child in tow, as the narrator warned that fallout will result in “radiation sickness followed by death” and ran down a list of necessary preparations including gathering 14 days of supplies and instructions on how to shelter from the blast.

Coldicutt struggled to maintain his composure as his bride-to-be frantically called her mother on her cellphone, “Mum, have you seen the news? We’re getting attacked, there’s an emergency.” before his mirth gave the game away, obviously a big relief but it was a really mean trick.

Redhead’s brother Alan posted the video on Twitter where it has racked up nearly a million views and counting following Russia’s seizure of a Ukrainian nuclear power plant which has folks understandably jittery that the real emergency alert could be forthcoming.

“It went brilliantly. Beyond expectations,” a pleased Coldicutt told British News Agency SWNS of his doomsday prank but fallout over his “tone-deaf” attempt at humor mushroomed across Twitter with many users struggling to find the humor in his trickery.

Some Twitter users were particularly angry about the timing of Coldicutt’s big surprise considering the increasingly dangerous situation on the ground that is facing Ukrainian civilians.

According to the Daily Mail, “Mr Coldicutt said the conflict wasn’t in his mind when he spotted the spoof video ‘UK Emergency Alert – Nuclear Attack Warning’ on YouTube and decided to use it to win the ‘prank war’ between him and his fiancee.”

“He said he was proud he managed not to laugh and found it hilarious – and relieved Ms Redhead immediately saw the funny side too,” the outlet reported. “She said she genuinely thought ‘the Russians were coming’ and ‘they were going to die’, and feels like she’s now ‘experienced the start of World War Three first-hand’.”

“I’ve watched it over and over because I keep laughing at myself. I say I’m not that dramatic, but I’m pathetically dramatic. Lots of people have said that’s how they’d react too though,” Redhead said, “I’ll try and get him back with a prank but I don’t think anything can top him creating World War Three.”
