An $800 double Jeopardy clue from a category named “Bordering Russia” that cited “serious border issues” sparked debate on Friday’s episode given the current war between Russia and Ukraine.
“The Kerch Strait — along with serious border issues — separates Russia from this country on the Black Sea,” the clue on the show’s signature blue background read.
“What is Ukraine?” contestant Adrian Alcalá correctly answered.
The show – which has aired more than 8,000 episodes – preemptively posted an explanation for the question on social media, apparently to get ahead of cancel culture and alleviate any accusations of being insensitive to the current humanitarian crisis in Ukraine.
“Please note the clue in today’s show concerning Russia and Ukraine was recorded on Jan. 11, 2022.” the show’s Twitter feed read before the show aired.

Producers also opted to post a message in the upper left-hand corner of the screen while the question was read alerting viewers that the episode was taped almost 2 months prior to its airing.

Some fans were grateful for the clarification the trivia-based show provided but others said no apology was necessary as there was clearly nothing offensive about the question.
I think everyone who watches Jeopardy knows these are prerecorded. That being said, I appreciated the note on the screen clarifying this as well.

Nothing offensive was said or written.
No need for any form of clarification or explanation.
Side note: I miss Mr. Alex.

Others were disgusted by the very nature of the fact that people feel a need to apologize for everything that might be misconstrued as even the slightest bit off-color and noted that the list of offensive topics is never-ending.
The fact they felt the need to “get in front of it” is a clear indication for how sensitive and ridiculous cancel culture can be.

Who gives a shit! Why did you feel the need to put that disclaimer on the clue?
— DJ BOZ (@djboz79) March 5, 2022
There is nothing offensive about the question. It’s just a fact. It’s sad that it has come to this, and people have to apologize for mentioning Russia or Ukraine in a non-war related context. Don’t forget a lot of Russian citizens are against this as wel, the problem is Putin.

So, now there are 3,761,822 topics out-of-bounds. I hope you’re aware the the word ‘BLACK’ is never to be used in an answer or question. Because that would be RACIST!

Other Twitter users took it a step further and accused the television show of using the question and the preemptive messaging as a tool to “juice” the ratings.
***Warning: Language***
This is how you juice the fucking ratings right here
