One New York Republican politician is trying to figure out the logistics of crowdsourcing firearms to send to Ukrainian soldiers and civilians as they do battle with invading Russian forces.
GOP Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman explained to the New York Post that he wants to host a gun drive to get weapons in the hands of the people who need it most.
“Just watching the Ukrainian residents making Molotov cocktails in a brewery out of beer bottles shows they’re in a desperate fight and we can’t stand by and do nothing,” he said.
“As President Zelenskyy said: he doesn’t need a ride, he needs weapons.”
However, a slew of bureaucratic red tape could stand in his way, which is why he is also planning to reach out to Long Island Reps. Andrew Garbarino and Lee Zeldin, fellow Republicans, to help him put pressure on President Joe Biden’s administration to expedite the process.
Despite the potential issues, Blakeman is determined to do what he can for those suffering from the war in Ukraine. He said he plans for the gun drive to run from Friday until Monday, asking people to drop off their weapons or buy and donate guns at SP Firearms Unlimited. He also claims that he has raised around $20,000 and said “I will be the first to buy a gun and donate it to the Ukrainian people.”
It remains to be seen how the effort will be received by the people, as social media reactions indicate:
Have a feeling this isn’t what Ukraine needs most

I think RPGs would be better.

You’d be a fool to surrender a firearm and think it’s going to Ukraine.

I like it. But it shouldn’t have been necessary. Biden should have armed them to the teeth.

Don’t trust this.

How do we even know they will actually get there

I’m so happy that dems finally support gun ownership

Cool but any gun you can legally get in NY is not much use over there.
