Unless you are Nell – from the movie “Nell” – you’ve likely been subjected at some point to the simple, genius comedic neurosis of Larry David.
The “Seinfeld” co-creator reemerged into the public light as the star of one of the funnier commercials from Super Bowl LVI in February (though he perhaps did not have that much competition from the field of submissions) and has announced that an anticipated two-part HBO documentary “The Larry David Story,” which “shines a new light on the infamous cynic who remains a singular voice in comedy today,” has been nixed as of late Monday, to be replaced instead by a live performance starring and helmed by David.
“The #LarryDavidStory on @HBOMax is being postponed. Instead, Larry has decided he wants to do it in front of an audience. Stay tuned for more info,” tweeted the official HBO Documentaries Twitter account.
The sudden change arose only two weeks after the network’s promotion of the documentary, which was billed as a “peek behind the proverbial curtain” of the 74-year-old comic and writer and a look inside the evolution of David “from his humble beginnings as an unfunny Brooklyn kid to becoming America’s favorite misanthrope.”

“The amount of pull Larry David has at HBO … wow!” tweeted another fan. “Just mere hours before it was set to premiere. King.”

Speaking of David’s decision to cancel the presentation just hours before it was due to air, one unnamed Hollywood insider told Page Six. “He’s the most neurotic person I have ever met. He’s Larry David.”
“He’s done so much for them [HBO],” the insider added.
David told Page Six during an interview published Tuesday, “I was thinking about coming here and saying, ‘Oh, this is an interview? I didn’t know it was an interview! I thought you just wanted to have lunch.’ Then you’d go, ‘No, no, it’s an interview.’ And I’d say, ‘Oh my God. I’m sorry.’ ”
He added, “I would say, ‘I just can’t do it. There’s been a miscommunication.’ ”
“Curb Your Enthusiasm,” an ad-hoc scripted show on HBO where David plays himself opposite Cheryl Hines and Jeff Garlin, debuted in 2000 and premiered its 11th season last year. The somewhat-high comedy vehicle has been nominated for 47 Emmys and won a Golden Globe in 2002 for best comedy series.
Though largely behind the scenes, David’s magnum opus is conceivably “Seinfeld,” created in collaboration with the titular actor and comedian, Jerry Seinfeld. The massively popular “show about nothing” ended its nine-year run in 1998 as a pillar of NBC’s “Must See TV” lineup of comedies and dramas of the 90s and by all accounts never “jumped the shark.”
A noted Trump hater who once let his derangement get the better of him and accosted renowned legal scholar Alan Dershowitz at a Martha’s Vineyard bodega in August, David along with Seinfeld has either launched or kept alive the careers of dozens upon dozens of Hollywood icons through “Seinfeld.” Sometimes even a baseball player or two.
