Fox News’ Tucker Carlson argued during his monologue on Monday’s “Tucker Carlson Tonight” that mainstream media in America along with their Democrat Party allies use large-scale calamitous events such as Russia’s invasion of Ukraine as a launch pad for stamping out dissent among the populace here at home.

The host denounced efforts by social media mega-platforms to prevent Russian propaganda from being harbored online, as well as criticizing some attempts to keep the Kremlin-controlled news network RT (formerly Russia Today) from the airwaves outside of Russia.

“They hate populist politics in this country far more than they hate Vladimir Putin,” he said. “So they’re using this opportunity, this war in eastern Europe, to shut down domestic dissent in the United States.”

He also claimed that “several” U.S. allies “have banned journalists who don’t agree with their view of the war.”

He continued, “If we’re gonna protect democracy, that should start at home and democracy is defined – literally defined – by the tolerance of the regime for dissent. But no dissent is allowed. So, they’ve pulled RT from the air waves in Canada. We did that long ago.”

Carlson brought up a recent article in Mother Jones magazine to illustrate his point on the dangers inherent when only those in power arbitrarily determine what is misinformation or propaganda:

Both RT and Sputnik air in the United States, too (which Carlson said is not true.) Will Biden follow suit and crack down on pro-Russia disinformation? If he does, US cable companies will also need to scrutinize media outlets like Fox News, whose shows —Tucker Carlson’s in particular—have parroted pro-Russia talking points. Russian media outlets are even using Carlson’s commentary to criticize Democrats and the Biden administration’s approach to sanctioning Russia over its infiltration of Ukraine. (Carlson eventually backpedaled a bit from his Putin defense.)

Carlson made the claim that Democrats are exploiting the Russian invasion of Ukraine as a means to their own ends of censoring opposing views and “using that as a justification because we care so much about democracy to shut down any news organization, any journalist who questions the Democratic Party.”

“It’s about shutting you up personally, your ability to express yourself.” he argued, and then played a clip of Sen. Mark Warner (D-VA)  – who is the chairman of the Senate Committee on Intelligence – explaining that he’s requested that social media platforms take down Russian “propaganda” or at the very least demonetize their attempts.

Carlson took issue with Warner’s perspective, describing his use of the word “propaganda” as something that Warner gets to subjectively define and concluded, “He’s talking about censoring the opinions of Americans. Now to be clear, that is not allowed in a democracy.”

The Fox News host has been critical of the same methods he claims are in use in Canada as well.

In light of the crackdown on Freedom Convoy truckers and their supporters by Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Carlson argued in mid-Februrary, “Trudeau himself didn’t mention the risk of COVID a single time yesterday. He’s not worried about unvaccinated truckers spreading a virus,”

He continued, “Trudeau is worried about Canadians resisting his rule. And that’s why Trudeau’s government announced yesterday they plan to regulate cryptocurrency forever.”

After an alleged data breach of the crowdfunding GiveSendGo account created for the Freedom Convoy, Carlson noted that Canadian media used the information collected from the data breach to “intimidate the donors.”

They are, he said, “unmasked in public, shamed, and of course, inevitably threatened,” Carlson said, for opposing Trudeau.”

He concluded at the time that the commonality among media companies in America and Canada is that all of them seem to be “squarely on the side of entrenched power against the population they supposedly serve.”
